I know some men that don’t know either.
They think by some magical reason turing it colder will make the air colder instantly.
Now if you have a newer two or multistage unit that can adjust the fan and compressor speed based on the perimeters set like humidity and temperature, that guy will act somewhat how the “idiot wife” thinks how it works. But probably 95% of the newer whole home AC units out there will not use this technology. Variable fan and compressor speeds in the name of energy efficiency are starting migrate into more practical whole home use.
I just bought a newer window unit to help keep an area cooler this summer, and it has the variable speed fan and compressor.

My wife and kids know how it works just fine.
Now some of these "men" I work with will bitch when the unit freezes up. Look at the thermostat and its on 50. Makes me wanna scream.

Go set your ac3 degrees below room temp, then measure air temp out of vent
Then set it 8 degrees below room temp and measure air temp out of vent
When the temp reading is the same 55 or so degrees come back to the thread and hand in your man card
he is technically not wrong. Youre saying that it wont instantly blow colder..it wont.
We know that all this does is keep the unit running until it reaches the new set point. But assuming that the heat loss in the home can be overcome by the AC capacity, the air will blow incrementally colder over time until the set point is reached. If you measured your register temperatures initially and then an hour or two later, it will be colder.

You think any woman setting the thermostat to 50 degrees is aiming to have it 5 degrees colder 2 hours later?

My wife's the same way and highly educated.
I finally was able to tell her that the actual system has no idea as the that temp actually is and only turns off/on according to what the thermostat tells it to do.

Mine thinks the higher you set it, the faster the house will heat up.

We have two Nest thermostats. Myself and my 3 yo are the only ones who know how to operate them. It was a game changer putting those in.

i was just taking the opportunity to have an "akshually" moment

he is technically not wrong.
He said
quote:It point blank will not blow colder. Ever. It will simply blow longer. So acktually, and technically, he is 100% wrong
Setting it lower than the desired temp Makes it blow colder
quote:Ahh, I see you also don’t know what you are talking about
y, the air will blow incrementally colder over time until the set point is reached.
I can laser shoot my air out the AC 2 minute after running and it’s roughly 55 degrees. I can shoot it an hour after running and it’s roughly 55 degrees

One time my wife was blowdrying her hair and the AC was running. She came out and turned the thermostat down because she was hot. I told her babe, the AC's already on, that's not gonna make it MORE on. She got so pissed.
It's a strange phenomenon with women I've found. I've told my male coworkers this story and they all have similar anecdotes.

some people are oblivious to how things actually work (mainly women)

Raises hand. Although I think mine is starting to get it. We've been married for 32 years, so it won't be long now, I'm sure.

This only works if you have a relatively modern unit that will adjust to the demand with a multi-stage compressor and/or a variable speed fan in the air handler. The temperature differential for the higher demand call is typically 3 to 5 degrees. Probably very rare in units that are 25 years or older.
You already knew this but you also need to know your audience.

It’s very rare period. Very expensive as well

No. my wife has no idea how they work.
house came with the older Honeywell 8000 series (green screen) 7 day programmable. they stay on Auto/Auto. I've replaced one with a similar white-rodgers.

It's amazing that a grown man really believes this. Gleason come back in this thread to receive your medicine. If you have ever had AC troubles ever in your life you would know this is not the case.

Unrelated to op. But why can’t people make gifs that actually say in writing what the person is saying?
Posted on 4/11/24 at 10:02 am to auwaterfowler
Mine sure as hell knows how it works and thinks she's saving a lot of money by setting it too damn warm in the house.
