better discourse on an anonymous LSU football forum’s sub forum for video games? how noble.
Yes? But not out of nobility.
I spent years enjoying my time posting on the PT before it devolved into the abject shithole that it is now. My enjoyment of TD is lessened because of it. It’s my preference that the forums I still do post on, and enjoy, don’t get overrun by the same kind of idiocy that the PT was. Now, I’m one person, so the impact that I have is negligible at best, but I still think it’s worth a few seconds of effort.

That’s exactly how i felt about sports and sports media until about 2020. And SNL until about 2016.

for clarity purposes, what type of idiocy are we talking about?

I hope I’m wrong and this game is great. But I just have no desire to play as a main character that looks like she cried when Trump won in 2016.
And before you ask, yes, I would have had the exact same reaction if the post said “…when Biden won in 2020.”

This stuff has been pushed in video games and is getting a bit tiresome.
I liked Spiderman 2 but it really lowered my excitement when they threw in the climate change bullshite. Oh this again... yeah no thanks.

Which again, I get. But we can at least wait to react until there’s something legitimate to react to? Blowing a gasket simply because the protagonist is female is just silly. Blowing a gasket because the female protagonist is only kinda cute instead of gorgeous borders on braindead.
On the other hand, assuming that an Ubisoft game is likely to be dogshit is more than reasonable

Putting the woke thing aside, it looks uninteresting as hell
I would be willing to bet the 14-year old Smuggler main quest line from the Old Republic ends up a more compelling story. And that’s sad to feel

let’s say i believe you.
i also didn’t appreciate when every video game i logged into in 2020 had to remind me that certain lives matter.

of course it is. you can’t preach at people and be boring in the same game/movie. it’ll flop.

And I recall back then there being a thread with people bitching about a BLM mural that was part of a mission (or something along those lines; I never played the game) in Miles Morales. And regardless of how I personally feel about the nuances of that debate, I thought that was a perfectly reasonable conversation to have on this board.

I simply don’t think similarly about the comments made thus far in this thread about the protagonist of this game.

I have zero problems with the main characters design. She looks like a normal person. Big fricking deal. I dont need every guy in a video game being a roided out freak and every woman a supermodel.
i dont care that the game has a female protagonist (although, come on starwars,, we get it).
What I do care about is that this game looks mediocre at best, and trite/ uninspired at worse. The only reason this is getting any buzz is quite literally because it has starwars in the name. This very well could be set in any universe it it would still fly. Lets be honest, if they did do that, say it was called "Galaxy Outlaws" and not tied into the SW universe then this game would likely spark no interest and vanish like a fart in the wind.
on top of that, what kind of BS pricing scheme is this shite? 70 dollars for the full game, but wait, you dont get the full game, you need to shell out another 40 if you want the real full game? Add to that the pretty damn obvious ploy to funnel people intot he monthly subscription.
frick this shite, out. Ya;ll need ot stop arguing bout this game cuz this game probably isnt worth arguing about.

You seem to be under the impression their choice of protagonist was at random and not at all about a larger mindset with the groups/industry that basically gatekeep all modern content.
You think gaming companies don't know their exact demo? They know exactly who buys their games and plays them.
The female protagonist movement in very male-dominated IPs and content is about sending a message. It's a "you need to learn your lesson" move and it's no longer hidden within the broader art of the content but obnoxiously plastered into every element of film/game making.
Are boys drawn to homely looking 30-plus wannabe male behaving women? They've never been. Never in history. It's not a debate.
This is a "frick you little incel nerd gamers and your ways". That's what gamer gate was, that's what all of this is, it's in marvel, star wars, etc.
Notice they don't create entire new stories or content to display their fanfic female characters? Because that's not going to put their trash narrative in front of the right audience they want to lecture.
This is what's missing for some folks in here. You're missing the broader context on the gaming/movie industry and the dogmatic worldviews they want to inflict on their customers. It's a game for you, but ITS A CRUSADE for them...it's a religious revival for them. It's as important for them to lecture you on female empowerment as it is a Jehovahs Witness to go door to door asking you to join their faith.
You have to understand the insane religiosity of their faith in their progressive politics. It's wildly radical and intolerant.

quote:Which is what a lot of media is getting wrong these days. Media, including video games, have long made political statements. I may find its political “critique” of libertarianism (or more accurately, Objectivism) to be off base, but Bioshock is still one of my favorite gaming experiences of all time, as the execution of the game, and game world, was incredible. It seems like a recent phenomenon that game devs have decided that making a political statement is not only necessary, but sufficient, to making a good game. That’s what keeps burning them.

100%. LOVE BIOSHOCK. And I disagree on it's take on libertarianism is as well.

It's not just that there's politics, it's more that it's the same exact left wing political theories/slogans/movements, etc. In every single piece of content.
It would be way more interesting if other political perspectives were allowed, but that's not what's happening as it's always the same exact cohort dictating everything.

I mean, I think that’s part of it, but I think the bulk of it is that they keep churning out boring games. As an example, Horizon: Zero Dawn is arguably “left” in its political leanings (though I think it’s more nuanced than that), but regardless, it’s still a really, really good game.
Bioshock 2 is a fine game, but I don’t think it’s as good as Bioshock 1, and the former attacks a political ideology I hate while the latter (at least claims to) attack a political ideology I espouse.
Make good games and people will spend time with your political statement. Make bad games and no one will care what you have to say, regardless of what you’re saying.

I agree, I've always posited that Bioshock 1 is not the scathing critique of objectivism that everyone on Reddit thinks it is.
