Schools in Nola are deliberately keeping students inside during the eclipse.

At least according to this morning's Picayune. They are calling it a safety issue. They are worried about kids looking at the sun and going blind, I suppose.

Is this what we have become? Schools ignoring a once-in-several-decades experience to avoid lawsuits?

They don't want them running off and stealing things from the surrounding neighborhoods.

Hell, I should be kept inside, too. I looked like this after the last one.

Yes. It sucks, but people would sue and you know it.

How would they partake in the experience without going blind without proper eyewear? What could they do if they were outside?

smart move. I think JP letting them out of school early is stupid.

Teachers are "protecting" kids because they are dumb.

Teachers are supposed to help kids not be dumb.

It’s pretty much not even worth watching in New Orleans that far away from the path of totality

The eclipse is a pretty good litmus test for how pussy people have become. I don't remember any of these various "safety concerns" around the eclipse ~7 years ago.

There was an eclipse in the early 1980s, and I remember us all standing in the yard at Hynes Elementary watching it. That was (still is?) an Orleans Parish public school.

ETA a lot of the concerns seem to be coming from the "usual suspects": the mask-wearers, the noose-finders, the differently gendered...

You know damned well that parents would be crying for the news cameras about how their babies got their cornears damaged cus the teacher let them stare at the sun and trying to sue everybody in town.

Don't act like this is your first visit to Earth in the 21st century.

I remember when schools would pass out psychedelics and then take us out to the city center to watch the entire show, eclipse and sacrifices and everything.

On THIS issue

Orleans > Jefferson

What JP is doing is the most pathetic thing I’ve ever heard of.

All schools dismissed by 1pm, some as early as 10:15 AM!!!! Why bother even having school?

There are schools who are not allowing kids to go out unless their parents sign a permission slip.

I think our school bought glasses for all the students. We had to sign permission form says they could go outside
