I know we are quite early in this thing.... but what is a realistic timeline to getting the bridge rebuilt?

if the Houston Ship channel beltway bridge construction is any indication, could be a decade

I Shudder to think, but what would happen if something like this were to befall the Mississippi River Bridge?

I just watched the full video of the ship hitting it and the bridge collapsing, I would’ve thought the bridge would’ve slowly collapsed, but it happens in only 1 second. The entire thing is in the water instantly

The main video that I keep seeing being played, is sped up. I see a normal speed version showing every few minutes and it looks normal.

The entire bridge doesn't need to be cleaned up, just the middle section for the shipping channel. In a major state of emergency, any idea how long that would take? I'd assume a couple of weeks?

I could easily see a $100 million salvage cost, maybe more.

That would be a major disaster… gridlock for months and months. I-12 would be backed up to the east for at least
20 miles as well as I-10 to the west.

SIAP
According to the story in the Daily Mail, the ship did issue a "MayDay" and traffic going onto the bridge was halted. If so, brilliant move.

Just look on vessel finder, it will show what’s blocked in currently.

They would move east-west traffic to highway 90 through New Orleans to Lafayette. It might actually improve traffic in Baton Rouge proper.

Man...the way it went, so quick.

If a foreign power ever really wanted to hit us, they could just hit our infrastructure in a few key places

traffic in that area is about to suck times 100
It's gonna suck. The West Seattle Bridge was closed in March 2020 because of cracks and it made my 12 min commute to the office to be 1 hour on a good day, nearly 2 hours on a bad day. It was closed for 2.5 years. Just a little extra spice to my covid experience.

Btw, the brige was built in the 80s because a ship like the one in Baltimore knocked out the previous.

Have you ever made this trip? Hwy 90 from Houma to Lafayette might be worst stretch of road in Louisiana and that is saying alot..

That would be worse. You can’t shut down 12. All those trucks would still use it to get to BR. That’s where the gridlock would set
In. All that traffic would be sent over the 190 bridge. They would do the same thing from the west side.

Gotta do the environmental study first. That's a minimum 6 months and few million in the right pockets right there.

Considering the amount of money they’ll be losing daily, I’d imagine there will be some higher up billionaires telling people to get it done by any means necessary.

What would the protocol be? I'd assume you'd have to get a crane ship in there but likely have to have divers or something cut the bridge into movable pieces?

Clearing the debris will take a couple weeks at least, but the real logistical nightmare IMO will be moving the ship itself.

They'll have to assess its damage and probably transfer a good amount (if not all) of the cargo off the ship before it can be moved out of the way. Given how some of the container stacks are leaning in the photos, this will definitely take some time.

No idea if they'll just be able to "move it off to the side" but it will definitely be a narrower squeeze that some shipping companies may not want to mess with until it's back to normal.

I read that construction on this bridge began in 1972 and it opened in 1977.

CNN just reported a local pilot was on board.

You have to have local pilots coming into ports, especially if it's an international vessel coming in.

Then how did the construction guys not know about it? Those guys guaranteed had radios. At least attempt to get in those trucks and haul arse.
