Frey needs to be in the lineup every game moving forward unless he gives you a reason to take him out.
He's gonna continue to use Milazzo as a defensive catcher that he puts in late in the game with a lead. He's not good enough at the plate to be used as anything more than that, especially against SEC pitching. Neal has his struggles too, but his ceiling is much higher.
As of now your outfield should be Pearson, Frey, Bingham. While Giving Larson and Brown some opportunities as well.
As far as bullpen he just needs to learn more about what guys to go to in certain situations, which has been extremely difficult up to this point. Would love to see Ulloa throw in more meaningful innings, IMO he's our best bullpen guy and didn't throw a lick this weekend.
Jay will right the ship and we will be a much better team in May, we always are.

The glaring issue for the baseball team is not having runners on base. This weekend:
Even when we were getting a lot of runners on base we weren't getting the timely hits to take advantage of it.

I think that we should brace ourselves for a rough SEC record a few weeks from now, and I think that we could still be a really good team even if that happens. I think that CF is the greatest challenge - Kling living up to his potential would make this position a strength, but the only other options involve a significant downgrade on defense, and/or little to no experience.
Holman and Jump are clearly the Friday and Saturday guys. Hurd is pretty clearly the Sunday guy, but will likely have a quicker hook going forward (maybe Hurd + Herring on Sundays). Anderson doesn’t appear ready for a weekend spot (or significant role). Bullpen will need a few guys to prove themselves to be reliable - I wonder if Cam Johnson will step up to be a significant contributor down the stretch, or if he’s really that far off given all of his potential.

but why does Milam get the chance to battle through his slump and Kling doesn't? Both play exceptional defense, have the talent, and are really struggling offensively. So what makes Milam different at the moment?
Middle infielders fielding ability tends to be more important, but I will agree, the most vocal opinions are way more critical of kling than of Milam when they are in similar situations.
Fact of the matter is people are sour on kling because of what he was supposed to be in comparison to milam.

Do you have a stat breakdown since SEC play started? Genuinely curious how those line up when pre-SEC stats are removed.
It's a small sample size and Bingham is the only one to play all of the games. I included Milam & Neal since they haven't been hitting either.
Since the first MSU game (including La tech)
Bingham is batting .233 (7 for 30), .300 OB%, 4 Rs, 5 RBIs, 3 BB
Kling is batting .083 (1 for 12), .267 OB%, 3 BB/HBP and 1 Run, 1 RBI
Milam is batting .091 (2 for 22), .231 OB%, 4BB, 1 run, 0 RBI
Neal .000 (0 for 15), .167 OB% 3 BB, 1 run , 1 RBI
I think all three of them are better than the numbers above. I am probably in the minority but I don't think the difference in Bingham's & Kling's bats is greater than the difference in their gloves.
If Frey was healthy and you told me that Bingham had to play center to move Pearson to LF and Frey to RF... that is basically trading Kling's glove for Frey's bat and I'd take it. But right now, JJ keeps putting Neal in the lineup and his bat is as cold as anyone.
eta. corrected mac's stats

Exactly. Tanks is your quintessential three hole hitter.
Maybe on most other teams. With this lineup, Travinski checks that box for the 3rd spot. Compared to Tanks, Trav's got a better BA, SLG%, and more HR per AB). Tanks is perfect in the 2 spot.
#2 Tanks (least strikeouts, puts the ball in play)
#3 Travinski (More extra-base hits than Tanks, highest OB% on team)
#4 Jones (Team leader in HRs, & extra base hits)

Kling not getting runner home from 3rd early in yesterday's game w/ less than two outs is so frustrating...He just does not go to the plate w/ a real understanding of what his job is in each specific situation. You will not always execute and get the runner home from 3rd with less than two outs but Kling fails to execute b/c he just goes up there swinging away / guessing way too much. Ultra talented guy but he ain't much of a baseball player. Milam is a baller. Play that guy

1. Once Frey gets completely healthy he has to be in one of the OF Spots.
2. Bingham to CF and Kling back to Roaring Springs, Pa. I dont care what MLB Projections say the Kid cannot play at this level.
3. Leave Anderson on Midweek and let him continue to devleop.
4. Starting next Sunday anything pas the 4th inning have arms ready in the Pen and pull Hurd at the first sign of trouble. We have tons of arms in the pen but two weeks in a row JJ leaves Hurd to rot on the vine until its too late.

Can Guidry hit? Try him at short
Why stop there? Guidry to SS and Hellmers to 3rd base. We can move Tommy to 2nd and put Kucherak at 1st. With the infield and hitting problems solved I say we move Jake Brown back to pitcher to take Ack’s relief spot. Put Jones at C to fix the defense there and try Neal in CF to replace Kling. Problems solved.

LSU has Bingham hitting .222 in SEC play with 2 HR 1 double and 3 walksand 5 RBI
Kling is hitting .000 with 2 walks.
Right now idk if the difference between Kling’s defense and Bingham’s is worth 1 run a game.

He’s a struggling sophomore who didn’t play much last season. A bad season or long slump doesn’t determine whether someone is or will be good enough to play at this level. Maybe you shouldn’t expect this to be his best season here.

Are you sure that we want to try Neal in CF? He hasn’t looked comfortable in RF so far. I think a rangy guy like Travinski might be the better bet.

You could be onto something

You’re not serious about getting better unless Milazzo gets his shot in the outfield

When he plays, we win.

Kling and Neal not taking that step forward this year has really hurt us.
Jones has.

You’re right. I wasn’t clear. I just meant that he didn’t start and play a full season. He didn’t have a ton of SEC experience. Obviously neither did Neal.

Maybe they will turn a corner. Usually small fixes can make a big difference.

Best? Why frame it in those terms? Isn't he a draft eligible sophomore?
Realistically, I expected Kling to be batting over .300. I doubt anybody expected what we're seeing. He's just really struggling at the plate.

Lineup:
1. Braswell SS .333 BA .520 Ob% in conference play
2. Pearson LF
3. White 3B
4. Travinski DH
5. Jones 1B
6. Bingham CF
7. Frey RF
8. Milam 2B
9. Milazzo C
Get these guys AB on midweek games:
Neal, KlingLarson, Brown and Kucherak.
I guess Pearson is an option at 2B but i don’t think he will.
The fair question is, why does Milam start and not Kling?
I dont know who you replace Milam
with. We have better OF options. Bingham started at CF for a P5 team for 2 years

I could be wrong but I’ve got a feeling he is going to return after this years draft. Just because someone is draft eligible does not mean they are leaving or should be playing at a certain level. I frame it that way because he has 2 1/2 seasons left to play here if he wants.

Why is that? Because of his projection coming out of high school?
