Precisely, and Kathy Hochul openly admitted they're only after Trump.

Half a billion dollar fine for a victimless crime ?
Seriously?
Seriously?

It's cute that you think the Constitution means something to those people.

He opened himself up to. And yes, everyone here is retarded and doesn’t know the law.

How does Trump’s half billon dollar bond in NY not violate the 8th amendment?
I mean, it does, but who's going to challenge it?
The SCOTUS? They're flooded with BS to sort out from liberals circumventing the laws already.
The Washington Republicans? Pfffttt. Most of them are quietly supporting the Democrats witch hunt against Trump and a few are not shying away from publicly supporting it.
Our system is broken when politicians can willfully ignore law and even use law against political opponents and noone in power cares.

It was a few years ago the Congress changed the bankruptcy laws whereas goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooberment debt could not be protected. Prosecutors since have force huge fines and restitutions upon the guilty.
Now, it appears debtors prison is back in play under a different name. If you fail to pay your fine or restitution, they imprison you for contempt of court.

I could tell you the answer but it would not satisfy your confirmation bias. If you want to know the answer go to law school and get the answer for yourself.

There were no damages. So a certain % of 0 will still be 0. It's why they are going with these arbitrary numbers.
Exactly. Which is why this is all bullshite.

izzat so??
did they make the law just for him??
Was there a flood of these kinds of 'insults to the community' that prompted the passage of such a law? if so - what, when, where, who?
If it was not written just for him - why has it never been applied before?
are they afraid he will go on the lam?? - wouldn't they actually like that??

100% agree. But it doesn't matter when nearly every function of government in a city and state are Democrat controlled. They will basically do anything they want and wipe their asses with the law and/or constitution.

Are there any lawyers on this board that aren't pompous douchebags besides Wednesday?

Going out on a limb, but I assume it's because he is worth north of $2.6 billion. In his case it wouldn't really be excessive because he can comfortably pay it.
Some countries believe as you do. Those countries are socialist.
Penalties should not "scale." That would be like giving one person a $150 speeding citation and another a $15,000 fine. It's a way of punishing someone for being successful. Which isn't what punishments should be.

Honestly, I've lost count of the number of Amendments to the Constitution that have been violated in Big Orange's case.
In every single instance since 2016, Candidate / President Trump's has been the victim of blatant and obvious State, District, and Feral violations of respective Constitutions, flagrant Kangaroo Court mis-justice, and fabricated, phony charges. "Excessive punishment" is made worse for non-existent "crimes" to begin with.
Law of Land situation: "It's dead, Jim"...
OR...
"Time to use The Kracken, dammit!"

It's not excessive, if you're the most richest billionaire ever ever that ever lived.
All relative...

Truly, we've gone past, Banana Republic to whatever the Ted Kaczynski was trying to warn people about. It's really freaking weird how prescient that guy was about a lot of things.

Hear ya.
Who knew Uncle Ted had a crystal ball? (or was somehow privy to "The Script")
We crossed the Rubicon about 2,000 miles ago.

It's not bail, it's an appeal bond, which is standard in civil cases. Trump doesn't have to post the bond, but if he doesn't then New York can start collecting on the judgment.
The 8th Amendment arguments may be raised against the judgment, but not the bond.
Thus was a civil case, though, and the 8th Amendment does not apply to civil damages. To the extent the damages were punitive in nature, the 8th Amendment might apply, but it's not clear.
Trumps better argument is the massive damage award violates due process.
