re: Do you know anyone that actually got in trouble for skipping jury-duty summons?

My old man was one of those poor, unfortunate souls that always seemed to get called up for jury duty ever few years. I know he had been on at least three juries. Anyway, the last time this happened, he had a massive heart attack two days prior. They had to zap him back from the dead twice, and he was in a coma for four days, but he pulled through. As you can imagine, my mother (no pics) was on an emotional roller coaster through all this, and for some reason got hung up on the idea that he would be in big trouble if he missed jury duty. I told her I'd take care of it. So I call up the EBR Clerk of Court office the day he was supposed to report, and told them what happened. I told them I could bring any paperwork they needed to show that he was indeed in the hospital. The lady was real nice, said I didn't need to bring any paperwork up, and that she would remove his name due to medical and age issues, and he wouldn't ever receive a summons again. I guess she did what she said she would do, because it has been 11 years now, and he never got a summons again.

I know of some people who had the Sheriff's deputies show up to transport them to Court.

When I was in the big room waiting, they called a lady's name and informed her that she wasn't required to serve because she was over 70. She declined to be dismissed though. It probably gave her something to do.
My dad couldn't serve any more. His hearing is too far gone.

What jury summons? I have never received a jury summons.
This is the correct answer.

I've gotten letters to report for jury duty but just throw them away.
Cant prove I got the letter.

In New Orleans they come by snail mail. Just toss it since it's not sent registered letter and needs to signed for, so "I didn't get it-----prove me wrong".
I got one March 2023 in the mail. I just ignored it because we had a family trip and airfare already booked for months. I didn’t want to acknowledge I received or go through process of them “allowing” me to take my vacation.
Low and behold, I got another sent this February and I did my day this March 2024. Instant release and basically just got a free day off of work.

I’ve only received a summons twice in 18 years. For my first I called and got it postponed due to a work conflict, when I called on the later date I told that that I didn’t have to go in. Received a federal summons a month ago and was also told that I didn’t have to come in a few days before I was supposed to report.
I really wouldn’t mind serving on a jury, but it would be pretty inconvenient due to child care.

I've been registered to vote for almost 39 years and I have never had a summons for any kind of jury duty. I'm not sure how that's possible.

My wife seems to get one every year that she responds to and it's nothing short of a fuster cluck. More times than none she's had to return for 2-3 days in a row only to be dismissed for the day.
She's been a juror on 2 trials, both involving felonies, one for murder and one for attempted murder. Oh, and both parties were found guilty and sentenced.

I did 20 years in the federal pen over it. Just go and get your 12 dollars a day or whatever it is.
I just told them I moved and that was all I had to do to get out of it.

I’m sitting in a jury summons right now. Defense asked what we read, I said Tigerdroppings.com. Pretty sure I’m not getting picked for this one.

Same for me the couple of times that I have been called and had to show up. But that was a couple of decades ago. I did just get a summons, though. I will have to call next month to see if I have to go.

Smart man, if I had thought of that I might not have been forced to eat ramen and get a swastika tattoo.

The last time I was called, about a third of them didn't show up. They just moved on to the next one. IDK if there were any consequences later for the no shows.

They don't want my white arse down there.

I’ve been called several times. OKC they can call you every 5 years. Last time I sat on a jury. Great experience it lasted a week. Work pays us so no big deal you just have to sign over your JD check to them.
I will say, those always trying to get out of it -what if someday you are actually the case. You would then hope a jury of your peers is fair. If many folks who would be good jurists scam way out of it that means the pool is more riskier you get someone not as fair.
Do your civic duty and go.

I have been registered for 37 years and never got a summons until 2013. Specifically on the date Alabama played Notre Dame for the BCS Title. I was told jury selection could last well into the evening. I threatened to walk out if we weren't wrapped up by 30 minutes before kickoff. Fortunately the perp copped a plea and I didn't have to make good on said threat. I've also been summoned twice since then. Once for a murder case but I wasn't selected.

I assume if there's enough responders, they won't actively go looking for someone. But if you get pulled over for speeding (or anything) and you have a bench warrant, you're taking a ride in the back of a cruiser.
This. The day you get pulled over for speeding 5 over and the copper was going to just issue a warning - then he runs your data and finds a bench warrant - you are going to jail. You will be let go but maybe if a Friday afternoon its not til Mon since they close.
Thats what bench warrants do, they sit and collect dust until you are stopped next time. Then they suck.

Gotten called once for federal jury duty and twice for 19th JDC.
Did not get picked on the one case I got empaneled for for federal, was released for the week after a few hours each time for JDC.
Specifically, on the last time for JDC, the clerks made a big deal about all the long trials up that week but that anyone looking to reschedule could line up to come back in a few months.
I just waited and, as soon as all those people were done, they released me and said I was good for the next few years.
