Someone stole and tried replacing pine cone I found

So they redid my cousin's pine needles for landscaping. I'm walking through the apartments and see this giant pinecone that is perfect. I grab it and put it by the front door. It sits upright perfectly in the curve of pine needle and concrete. She loves it.
Two days later she says the pine cone doesn't look right. Sure enough someone replaced it with an inferior pine cone! Its closed and missing some scales.
What kind of psychopath steals a pine cone and replaces it like some Indiana Jones and the Idol type shite?
Then I look 'em up and see that they are prized by home decor females and worth a pretty penny.
If ya got this far thanks for reading...
Anyway, is there anywhere in Baton Rouge that has huge pine trees not on private property? Maybe someone works somewhere that has them?

Pine cone thieves have been out of control in BR for several years now.

I got plenty of fairly big pine cones. Around 6+ inches in length.
I have seen longer ones, though.

Thanks for sharing. Despite the downvotes I enjoyed reading it.
You know that bitch is a room mom at school, on the HOA board, and probably feeds the homeless to keep her insta likes up.

A squirrel regularly leaves one at the top of the trellis by my place. It will magically appear...stay there for about a week...and then it's gone.
The lawn crew just came through here and raked up probably 100 or so. I didn't realize I was sitting on a fortune.

the big pine cones come from longleaf pines. This is the same pine that most pine straw that you see sold as mulch comes from
so, find a stand of longleaf pine and you will find your cones. The big ones are 6-8” long
all the pines on my property make small roundish cones

The H&G board is different than the OT. No way this comment shouldn't have drawn a few replies.

I just checked Ebay. Someone is selling "Louisiana long leaf pine cones" 5 for $12.30.
I also saw a "sugar pine cone" that is the length of a small child. $15 will get you one of those, but they want $14 to ship it.

I was fully prepared for the comments

Lol, yes as others have said longleaf pines have the largest cones of our native species. And yes the sugar pine which is non-native has the largest.

Fun trivial fact I learned this year: A very nice pine cone (maybe inferior ones as well) will "close up" if allowed to sit in water!
60 years along and never noticed this phenomenon.
Feel free to use and share this information at will.

Clever squirrel? Well, not as clever as he thinks he is.

Did the pine cone get wet in the rain?
Eatpie went in the direction I was thinking.
Put it in a 150 degree oven and dry it out a little. It is highly possible your prized pinecone will return.
