well doing a vertical takeoff or landing, i would expect them to be. i was speaking more of just seeing them (or what I thought was them) at cruising speed going overhead. but they were probably 22's.
pretty much unrelated to F-35s and their noise, a great book on the semi-recent history development of some of the most famous fighters we have (A-10, F-14, F-15, F-16, F-18) is a book called "Boyd" by Robert Coram. just a PSA for anyone interested on the topic.

One of the guys in the know can probably correct me if I'm wrong, but if you're on the north shore, I doubt it's an f22. There aren't any stationed anywhere close to Louisiana. 9 times out of 10, it's the f15's in this area. You'll occasionally get an f18, or a trainer. I've never seen f35s here unless for an airshow or their current training.

i dont mean here locally, i just mean at random places i've been stationed or sent to around the globe.
i might not be able to decipher a F-35 over an F-22 from the ground, but i do at least for sure know what an F-15 or an F-18 looks like

Now that you mention it, I can pick out a Chinook immediately via audio only. It's like Ma Deuce. You know. We almost never get Chinooks over Houston, but between Corpus Army Air Depot and Austin, we get a fair number of helo transits on their way to Rucker or wherever they're going.
F-14/F18A/E, A-6, no clue. Everything was on afterburner, all the time, near any air station. What? I can't hear you!!
One of the best things about being on the Gulf Coast (on vacay) is getting the Coast Guard wake up. Sea Sprites waking you up in Corpus Christ, C-130s out of Keesler flying low over the beach in Alabama. When your kids are on the sand, F Yeah!

We've shipped 737 based AWACS to Australia, at least. It's the E-7 replacing the E-3. E-7 has a stationary radome that is much smaller. The USAF contract starts in 2025, I think.
The P-8 may have been the model for "do it better, and faster." Anecdotally, it seems to be a grand success of capability.

Those horizontal stabilizers/rear elevators are the dead give away. Trapezoidal on the 22. Not to mention the dual engines on the 22 vs the single on on the 35.

What nicknames do you give to the 22 or the 35? Anything operated by the USMC deserves something involving Crayon, of course.
They have official nicknames, of course, but I am more curious in what the pilots and maintainers call them.
