Bayeux/Normandy

We will be there for a few nights this summer. Trying to decide between a hotel/VRBO either in the Bayeux city center or a place closer to the water. Any strong opinions one way or the other? I've heard Bayeux is the place to base for Normandy but is the city itself worth staying in or would it be a place just to drive in spend a few hours? TIA

For sure stay there. We loved Bayeux. I can't remember what hotel we stayed at but there aren't many there. The city has a lot of small shops and restaurants

Bayeux is great. Not destroyed in the war, so it’s a good, old Normandy town. Perfect place to be your base for a Normandy trip.

Bayeux is the place to stay. It is the only town around there that was not bombed during WWII , thus the cathedral and old town are still intact. It is a quaint town with some good restaurants and is about six miles from Gold Beach, the center of the landing beaches.
We stayed at Hotel d’Argouges, a small B&B type of place a few blocks from the town center. It is a nice hotel with bar service outside in the gardens where we would spend cocktail hour most nights.
We stayed there during Easter 2019 just weeks before the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
The D-Day tour to take is through Overlord Tours.

Bayeux
We stayed here. It is in town and walking distance to everything. If I remember the story it was built in the 18th century for one of Napoleon’s lieutenants.

Just to give my $.02. Went to Normandy this last Mardi Gras. We spent one night in Bayeaux in an AirBnB. Thoroughly enjoyed it. We arrived from Paris at 1 pm, strolled around the city that afternoon. We ate lunch at the restaurant in the Hotel Le Reine Mathilde. Bayeux is a nice quaint town with a beautiful cathedral, easily walkable.
Our guide from Overlord picked us up the next morning for our D-Day tour. When the tour was over he brought us to the Bayeux train station for our trip back to Paris.

We did a Viking River Cruise in November 2022, then rented a car in Paris and drove to Normandy for a week afterwards. One of our best trips ever.
Selected Photos.
We based in Bayeux and stayed in the Grand Hotel Du Luxembourg. Nice hotel with everything you'd need. Centrally located. Reasonbly priced.

Went in 2018. Stayed in an apartment on St Malo. Everything in town was a short walk.
Le Pommier is excellent.
Also Le Volet Qui Penche (the hanging shutter) is very good.

Hotel Villa Lara This is where we stayed. It was walking distance to lots of restaurants and we took a day trip to Normandy.
