Unusual wagering activity around the Temple University-Alabama-Birmingham men’s basketball game Thursday night prompted a gambling watchdog company to send an alert to casinos, according to a Sports Illustrated report.
quote:
Most sportsbooks had UAB at around a two-point favorite when markets opened Wednesday, but the point spread jumped as high as eight points at some casinos, according to line movement tracking by Covers, prior to the game’s tip-off on Thursday.

UAB easily covered the point spread Thursday night, dominating the Owls in a 100-72 win at Temple’s Liacouras Center. The movement caused U.S. Integrity to flag the activity to sportsbooks, according to the report, which says the watchdog group has been monitoring Temple games “for a while.”

John Chaney wouldn’t have let this happen
Ignoring the line movement Temple is awful and probably mailed it in weeks ago while uab is trying to get into the postseason so the arse kicking scoreline isn’t too surprising. People on twitter are mentioning the +22 uab rebounding margin

Hate to tell you, but there has been illegal gambling activity in college sports for decades. Stevin Smith got caught 30 years ago shaving points and throwing games. Gambling messed up sports a long time before NIL did

Exactly. Arizona St, Tulane, even Boston College (which was engineered by Henry Hill and Jimmy Burke of "Goodfellas" fame).
NIL probably provides LESS incentive to do so now. But it doesn't mean it's completely gone. Particularly in basketball where point shaving is relatively easy

Then why was the line only -2?

Basketball has historically been the sport of choice for a lot illegal gambling, especially college basketball. A single player can change the dynamic of a basketball game, add that to small schools whose programs typically fly under the radar and college kids who are always looking to make a buck and you have the perfect recipe for sketchy shite

Due to online sports books there are orders of magnitude more money being bet on college sports than there was back then.
Do I agree this has been going on for a long time? Yes
Do I think refs are being bought? Yes
Do I think NIL is going to fix it? No
Am I increasingly less personally invested in all of these collegiate sports for all of these reasons? Absolutely.

Is it painful going through life being this dumb?

Officials can also affect the game by fouls called and other calls, no-calls. Tim Donaghy is the perfect example of this.

Someone with enough money to move a line?? Probably not him but he’s the most famous Temple alum

In fairness UAB -2 was a steal. Temple is arse. UAB has several quality wins this year

excellent question considering Temple is terrible, is last in the conference, has a 10 game losing streak this season in conference, and has only beaten the other bottom teams in the conference for a 4-13 record. BPI of 217 and NET of 234
Meanwhile UAB is in a tie for 4th place in the conference at 11-6, has a NET of 117 and BPI of 129, and is a decent road team at 5-4 in conference and 9-5 overall.
Bettors probably recognized the 2 point line as being way off, even though the BPI predictor said a 1-2 point favorite for UAB as well, but anyone with a brain could see that Temple sucks and there was a good chance UAB easily covers 2 fricking points, which is basically a win.
ANytime Temple played a decent team this year they got their arse kicked, outside of their close loss to Ole Piss before Thanksgiving.
