Nobody nails a supporting role like this guy. One of the best.

Great turn as Chief Roy Gunderson in the pilot episode of Murder, She Wrote. The first in a long line of detectives who come to appreciate Jessica’s abilities, character, and wit.
He’s got a great quote: “Suppose you tell me what happened here last night, Mr. Giles. Folks don't go around gettin' half their heads blown off for no reason. I'm lookin' for motive.”

had great range. Could do comedy (1941/Back to School), and could also be the villain (Shooter)

Don't forget him as Mr. Morehouse in The Toy
"He wants the black man. Huh? Oh no. No. No tomorrow. No next week. No next month. No next year."

He was a perfect fit for Homicide Life ON the Street.

He played Alan Crum in the 1975 movie "The Deadly Tower" about Charles Whitman (played by Kurt Russell). It was filmed at the state capitol building.
At the top of the capitol:
Inside the capitol:
As a bonus, here is Kurt Russell sniping around Baton Rouge:

To go from that infamous role in Deliverance (his first film job, by the way) to go on to have the Oscar nominated career that he had is just phenomenal.
