Cortisol bad.

I've made efforts to reduce it in my life. I suggest others do the same. Changes everything about your mental and physical well-being. Focus on sleeping, laying off caffeine until you've had time to eat and get moving in the morning, breathing exercises (which I do in the shower in the morning and before bed, takes 1 minute), 30 minute walks every day, etc. Little stuff that really manages cortisol in the body.

ETA:

Also these things have limited alcohol cravings for me. I still drink but far less because I'm so stressed out and moreso because I just like a good scotch .

My dad's uncle did this. When we'd visit, he'd open a handle of Jack. It'd be gone by the time we left. He died in his late 80s.

I was at that point with vodka after my sister passed away last January. I couldn't sleep, so I turned to drinking until I passed out. By August, it got to the point eating a piece of lunch meat hurt like hell. I went to treatment September 1st and have been sober ever since. It's a miserable way to go through life, no one that drinks that much every single day is happy, they're trying to drown something out and need help. I'm glad that I got it.

Same here. It's crazy to me now to think I got to that point. The relief once you've fully detoxed feels better than being drunk ever did. That's what I hold on to.

I was a gin and tonic guy.

Probably had 3-4 decent sized drinks pretty much daily after work and steady on the weekends.

Had high liver enzymes on my last check up and took an ultrasound and TWO MRIs to find out I DONT have liver cancer. But it was a very long and stressful process.

I’ve only drank on maybe four occasions since October and once this year.

Moral of the story, get your check ups. I would still be hammering them down 7-8 months later had I not done a check up (for the first time in a long time).

ETA I’m 37

I took a breathalyzer each time I entered rehab. .256, .289 and a .326 rehab #3.

Very first psych ward trip was a .412 (had alcohol poisoning and had to pump my stomach). Last ER trip (last time I drank) was .383. My GP still reminds me of that when I go for my annual. If he wouldn't have read the blood alcohol test to me, directly from the hospital, in his office for the follow up visits. I would have never believed those numbers were possible.

It makes me sick to my stomach to think I was destroying myself willingly. Only disease in the world that tells you that you are not sick...all while killing you.

It's been well over ten years so I can repeat it now.

Coolidge literally drank himself to death. So talented. Two engineering degrees, passed the bar, and was a drummer. Just drank, drank, drank since he was 18 or so.

His father finally got him committed for 30 days after going to court but it was too late. I picked him up from treatment. Skin was already yellow and that damn bulge was right there above his stomach. He passed a month or two later. Cirrhosis is a bitch.

Great guy and hilarious friend. Just wasn't stronger than that particular demon and couldn't beat it on his own.

Met a dude in treatment that was retired from the Navy. Guy was a submarine commander. Seemed smart as hell and funny as shite. It hurt watching him suffer. He was swollen, couldnt piss, and they were having to take him to the hospital to drain fluid around his liver. And he was yellow. Dont know whatever happened to him. But I remember it crystal clearly.

Yup. You don't forget that. Several of us here banded together to help him over his last year or so. Jenx was great as was Rex.

HAD a friend who'd kill Jim Beam every round of golf. Quit golf, but not Beam! made 73 on the calendar, not on the course. RIP, Bill

I was drinking a half gallon of Evan every 3 maybe 4 days. Not including beer or apple pie moonshine. Quit for about 5 years till covid. Now it’s not a necessity everyday. Maybe a beer or 2 at dinner if I think about it. The detox was rough never want to do that again

If you had a drinking problem that was serious enough to require you to go through a detox program you are only fooling yourself to believe that your current drinking is acceptable. It will ultimately progress and could very well get back to your previous level.

I had worked my way up to about a handle of vodka every 2-3 days just before COVID and for a good chunk of it.

I could do that rate of consumption, starting around 4pm, and be asleep by 9/10, get up at 0600, and carry on like nothing happened. My wife was not a big fan of that protocol, but it was fun for a while.

I have tempered the program for everyone’s sanity but still get my swerve on as needed.

Well… that was a pretty good run if he was in his 80’s.

Drunk and stupid is no way to go through life…

Unless you live until 87.

I remember when I was active duty my barracks were right next to the shopette (larger gas station). I probably spent $600/mo on booze. It wasn't until I moved in with my now wife that I realized that. Then my drinking buddy got kicked out for things that are a result of being alcoholic. He fixed himself with one of those 18 month rehab programs and now is 1 year in a psychology masters program.

My brother in law drank that and more everyday for a couple years. This was after two decades of drinking many beers every single day. Shocker, he died in May of pancreatitis leaving behind a kid who misses him daily. He just couldn’t quit regardless of how many times he went to rehab.

I can't imagine that hangover every morning and trying to be any sort of productive

That's where it truly sinks it's claws into you...
best short term remedy for a hangover is hair of the dog, AKA another drink.
We used to do this with Jazzfest and other such long-term parties, start the next morning with a Salty Dog or similar.
