Maybe I missed it, but why did they kill that lady’s baby and husband?

And why is everyone ok with it?

It's be baby of the guy who spoke out of turn in front of the council, claiming they were insulting Torunaga.

It was part of the culture. They let him live basically but ended his line.

I thought the dad killed the baby and then the dad committed seppuku? Pretty fricking rough for speaking out of turn, if you ask me, but there's a lot I don't understand about Japanese culture.

You might be right. I need to go back and watch the first episode. I found it a little hard to follow unlike the second one.

Either way the culture was defined very specific with very little allowance for changing puinishment

Meh this doesn't bother me. While it very obviously looks like the Pacific Northwest, they've done a good job with the sets and the Japanese cast that it still feels right.

Yeah, filming this in Japan is basically pointless after WW2. They've done an excellent job with the set

No, dad killed himself and his son. There are two boxes, one for each, presented in episode 3.

are we supposed do think Blackthorne is screaming in portuguese the whole time?

Which sorta makes sense if he wants to be understood but he also is just cursing at people a lot.

one thing that is higlighrwd that I like is that as often as he calls the Japanese “savages” they call him “Barbarians”

2 sides of the same coin

just finished episode 3.

i remain thoroughly impressed by the production team on this show...it is A+ quality.

the one thing i hated was the scene with the translator chick unrealisticly whooping the arse of Ishido Sama's goons in a mary sue/girlboss moment. i wasn't expecting that in a show like this, but i guess i shouldn't be surprised as it was a female directing this episode.

hopefully that shite is kept to minimum. otherwise, this is a great show and i'm looking forward to ep 4.

Up until the 17th century women in Japan were trained to fight along Samurai. They had female warlords like Myorin who were known for their prowess. It was until after 1600 when women in Japan were regulated by bureaucrats to be just child bearers.

The scene aligns very much with their culture at the time.

that's great but in combat no combat trained female is taking out a group of trained combat men, c'mon son, you know its bs just admit it

Haven't seen the episode yet. I do seem to remember Mariko doing something like this in the original miniseries.

There are different levels of "combat training", and Mariko came from a higher family than most of the grunt-level soldiers. Thus, she'd be "more skilled".
And you do have to keep in mind, the Japanese aren't big Nordic people, they tend to be smaller and lean. You're not going to have a bunch of 200 lb dudes, who can just overpower a smaller but more skilled combatant.

Again, haven't seen the episode in question yet, but if an athletic gal knows how to land an elbow to the bridge of your nose or temple in an efficient manner, it will have quite an effect.

Wife and I are loving the show. It's top notch. Quality is really good. They do a great job of not over saturating dialogue and allowing the actors to act so you can feel their emotion.

Good mix of everything that makes a A+ show and A+ show. Excited to see where it goes. Picked up the book last year, decided to start reading it a long side the show. Enjoying both so far and seeing the subtle differences in the book and show.

Loved it, great episode. What an ending too. After all the action from the episode, ending with a swimming lesson and race to the shore.

Told my wife after the first time he went in, it was some type of test. Toranaga has a lot of respect for Blackthorne already and vice versa... interested to see where things go. Assuming Mariko's husband is dead, but we didn't see it on screen so who knows.

Never saw the original show and just now reading the book, so I'm not sure where it leads in that regard.

Yea with them not showing his death, curious if she and blackthorne become a thing and then he comes back into the picture at some point.

This. We got a rare example of a situation where the female character being capable in a melee combat situation actually makes sense. My main issue was with the actress’s fight choreography. She didn’t look confident using those weapons compared to the other characters in the scene.
