The Ryan Poles interview was interesting, in that I think it definitely confirms he is trading Fields.

You see the thing Daniel Jeremiah put out this week about positional value and why teams might be leery of taking Brock Bowers up high? It was basically just tying it back to the franchise tag number. You’re really not getting much of a discount. He was using the Chargers as an example. If the Chargers take Brock Bowers at five, you’re basically paying a tight end top-of-the-scale money, for a guy that hasn’t even played yet
Kyle Pitts being one of the biggest busts in league history is not going to help Bowers, either.

I did kind of make that up, but UnluckyTiger's smarmy "I know I am wrong on a lot of stuff, but this is what's going to happen" schtick had to be challenged.
Are you still mad that Bryce Young looks like the biggest QB bust since Jamarcus? I called him being terrible on that MNF against the Saints. Franchise QB's typically show flashes of brilliance. He showed absolutely ZERO this year. Poor Panthers fans.
And it's I'm right on a lot of stuff, get it right. But I also have the humility to admit when my take was wrong and/or gave bad info Stroud looks like a future top 3-5 QB in the league. He's an amazing talent and I thought he was going to be another bust.

I'm not a Panthers fan, so I couldn't care less about what Bryce Young does in the NFL

to be quite honest, I also didn't think he'd be nearly as good as he is in the NFL.

Is it really necessary to have the combine anymore or maybe change the format.
QB's don't want to do anything.
Most would rather do all the drills at their pro day where they are more comfortable.
Why should Daniels throw to anyone other then Nabers and Thomas.
Would it be better to have some regional combines, maybe one out west, east, north and south and break it up a little bit?

For the NFL teams it is just as important for the interviews and medical exams as it is for the performance. Also, the smaller schools don't have these amazing pro day experiences as the bigger programs.

Q
Many want to see what everybody can do under the same set of conditions. Hard to compare Pro day times when the conditions are different, and when tenths/hundreths of a second matter to the evaluators, conditions ARE a big deal. It's been well documented how many big schools pro day times are better than the combine times.

The reason guys at the top don’t do the combine is because they have already separated themselves through their tape and performance. Working out at the combine is a lose lose proposition. Any bad time or performance will either hurt your stock or at the least be leveraged by other teams to lower that stock in hope that player falls to them
The combine isn’t really for determining who is the best QB or best WR, it’s more about giving more info to teams trying to figure out the difference between their 34th WR and 35th WR on their rankings with the margins get a lot more thin past the top end of the draft
Especially when talking QBs, the only valuable thing for a QB to do at the combine are the team interviews. 40 times, throwing drills etc are all worthless to your stock

Last offseason Michigan’s Roman Wilson clocked a 4.33 40... out of 2-point stance. More impressive: he ran a mind-blowing 6.20-second 3-cone drill and a 3.77 shuttle. There will be a lot of eyeballs on UM’s top receiver this week at the NFL Combine:
Basically confirms these numbers are full of shite. One guy has run a sub 6.4 3 cone drill at the combine in the last 25 years and it was 6.28. According to some Michigan blogs they had another guy run a 6.1 3 cone last spring practice.

Some of the best performances that are field translatable come from those edge rushers with incredible speed-power combos.
Payton Wilson is another one that could have a star performance.

Does anyone have any data about correlation of combine numbers by position to relative performance in the NFL?

Will watch exactly 0 minutes of it this year
I may understand a little bit more if they want to take measurables of FCS/ D2 guys under similar conditions , but I'm still not totally convinced here about combines.

Anybody that’s drafts off of results at the combine, especially 40 time, is not doing his job. However the medical evaluations and interviews huge.
With medical evaluations you don’t get the program height and weight, but rather the actual size of the player. This is also a lot of teams’ first chance to get to interview these players.
While I used to get jazzed up for all of the drills despite knowing that they rarely translated to the field, I completely get that the boring, shite for tv aspects of the combine are the most important.
It’s also a great time to get all the nfl execs in the same area to talk trades and moves.

Former USC quarterback Caleb Williams deeply admires Michael Jordan and Walter Payton, loves deep-dish pizza and told ESPN he would be "excited" if the Chicago Bears take him No. 1 overall in the 2024 NFL draft.
Entering the NFL combine, Williams is the favorite to be the top pick in April. In his first public comments since declaring for the draft in January, Williams spoke in depth about the Bears, unveiled his combine plan and reflected on a journey to the NFL that is nearing a culmination.
"This is what I've been preparing for my whole life," Williams told ESPN by phone Tuesday. "Since I was 10 or 11, this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. At that age until now, it basically feels like your whole life.
"I'm excited. I'm ready to get back on a football team around my teammates and my brothers -- my new brothers now."
quote:
"If I get drafted by the Bears, I'll be excited," he said. "If they trade the pick, and I get drafted by someone else, I'm just as excited. Speaking about Chicago, they have a talented team, a talented offense and defense. For anyone to be in that situation, I think they'd be excited."
Williams pushed back on any notion that he would request a trade or wants to play elsewhere.
"I'm not pushing any agenda," Williams said. "At the end of the day, the Bears have the last say. Regardless of how I feel, I'm not pushing an agenda of, 'Yeah, I want to go. Or no, I don't want to go.' I'm excited for whatever comes."

I’m not touching a guy who comes to the Combine and doesn’t work out unless he’s injured.
Seems like that's becoming normal for top prospects. Use the combine for interviews and the Pro Day for the workouts.

Will the Bears:
A. frick it up by not drafting Caleb
B. Draft Caleb but ruin him like Fields

Did they ruin fields or was he just never that good of a passing qb? He’s an elite athlete, arguably the best any time he steps on the field, with an absolute cannon of an arm. If he could hit a baseball he’d be an all world outfielder.
But was he ever going to be a good enough passer?

BTj will be a very solid NFL receiver. He is a good route runner, catches with his hands, and has an elite length/speed combination. He's got a pretty damn high floor.

Easy there.
I'm not calling him a bust until I see how he does this year. He's legit been hurt most of the last 2 years. We can't hold that against him. And hopefully he'll have a competent QB, something he hasn't had since his first year in the league w/Ryan.
