They likely promised more than protection. If she'd been able to get away with her attempt to "get Trump," then she would've been the stuff of leftist legend. She would've gotten to go hang with Oprah, she could've named her career in public service, they probably would've made a movie about her storied romance with her co-prosecutor.
All that evaporated as they got closer to an actual trial. They can't have Trump publish that election fraud report he touted, especially not under oath.
