Society has empowered women so much, I think some of the health fear they should have is gone. Every movie you see there's a 120lb women beating the shite of 225lb special forces guys.

I would not recommend a woman running by herself, especially with headphones in, even in a highly trafficked area. There's a lot of sick mofos out there
Whenever I jog outside I carry runners' mace in my hand and turn the volumne down so low in my headphones that I can barely hear the music. Now that I think about it, the constant state of hyperawareness pretty much counteracts the mental and physical benefits of fresh air. Sucks.
I remember walking around the LSU lakes in college (early 00's) with my one of my roomates who who was from rural West Monroe and was not jaded from growing up with crime in NOLA like I was. It was getting dark out and there was a little bunny (not a wild rabbit, someone's pet) hopping near the side of the road. She tried to stop and pet it and I assumed it was a trap and we were about to get kidnapped. We didn't, but it's crazy that women have to think that way.

They have arrested an illegal alien for Laken's death.

Bump. Illegal alien just arrested for her murder. Thanks, Biden.

My daughter went to school there. It's a nice campus, but there are lots sketchy folks nearby. Though the school does warn its students and their parents, kids that age feel bullet proof and can make bad decisions, making it easier for miscreants to prey on them. Going for a jog in a park alone should not be a bad decision, but in this case, that's how it turned out.
UGA is not unique in that sense. All colleges are filled with a lot of naive young people who can become easy prey.

But my god at the homeless people. It looked like the walking dead.
Honestly see this in medium size towns now across the country. Meth more than anything.
Athens, at heart, is a liberal sanctuary in the middle of a bunch of conservative counties that don’t put up with shite.

Didn’t LSU have some issues with the area between the Greek theater and Kirby Smith? When I attended, it hadn’t been cleared out and I was told to never walk through there at night.
I forgot the nickname for that area. “Enchanted Forest” maybe?
Well, for one, my brother used to shoot people, walking alongside the Enchanted Forest, with a BB gun. Did it out of his Pentagon dorm window. It was funny as hell, until you think about it years later.

College can be a scary place, especially for young women. Doesn’t matter if it’s UGA, Harvard, LSU or La Tech.
I can see that being the case for SEC schools, but schools like Harvard have such a super-insulated student body that it makes the likelihood of something like this happening super low. The demographics at Ivy League schools are way different from those of southern schools.

That doesn’t mean those schools aren’t super dangerous too. Penn is located in the West Philly ghetto. These type of schools attract vagrants because the bleeding hearts on campus don’t want to “violate their rights.”

It happened several times a semester when I was at ole Miss but typically raped and not murdered but there were several murders during my college career in 80s.
There were several active serial killers around LSU when I was there in late 80s and early 90s. One of the actually broke into my apartment

The area Yale is in is no picnic either.

My daughter is on the UGA x country/track team and (obviously) runs in the area. This sent chills through my house. Truly heartbreaking what happened.
I was surprised how sketchy it is around campus. Good school but i def can’t recommend- unless you get a scholarship or something.

I used to fish the lake at the fields a lot back in the mid 90s.
I caught my Personal Best Largemouth at Lake Herrick in 1997 by the pedestrian bridge on a rattletrap at dusk.
I have spent countless hours on that lake trail and some of the wooded trails, and never once felt unsafe. But, I haven't been there in 20 years. I remember back then it was very populated, not really isolated at all, no matter how far back you'd walk, there'd be other hikers and joggers constantly. I can only imagine it's even worse [more populated] now. It's in the woods, but not exactly "remote". It makes me wonder how many times this perp actually went out there and had his moment spoiled by multiple people coming from multiple directions, it's a very populated recreational area.

UGA and GA law allows carrying tasers and mace on state property, still waiting on clarification on firearms. They have a page that "outlines" it but it's all legalese. In the wake of this tragedy, I have contacted them for clarification. I recommend your daughter carry something besides a cell phone and earbuds are a no-no.

By "Around Campus" I assume you mean "Off Campus but close to campus". On Campus isn't sketchy at all.
And Around Campus, outside of campus, the only sketchiness is panhandlers downtown.
And I believe this is the first murder on campus property since the 80s.

It's not the demographics of the school that matters, it's who hovers around the school to prey on students.
If there is a problem at Auburn, it's almost always caused by some creep from surrounding towns, like Montgomery.

#BREAKING Multiple DHS sources confirm the suspect in UGA student, Laken Riley’s murder—José Antonio Ibarra is here illegally from Venezuela. CBP documents show he crossed in September of 2022 into El Paso, Texas and was released due to lack of detention space. The 26 year old from Venezuela was arrested today by ICE-ERO Atlanta. He is being charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call and concealing the death of another— According to UGA Police Chief Jeffrey L. Clark.
It’s time to close the motherfricking border.
