I do. This shite is terrifying. Tell your loved ones to be on their guard.

I used to fish the lake at the fields a lot back in the mid 90s. Walked some of the trails on occasion. Just a lot of mentally ill and sinister people in the world. Surprised this is the 1st time it has happened. Those woodsy areas have always been ripe for an ambush type attack against a solitary female.

I would not recommend a woman running by herself, especially with headphones in, even in a highly trafficked area. There's a lot of sick mofos out there

Something like this happened a few years ago at ole miss right?

College can be a scary place, especially for young women. Doesn’t matter if it’s UGA, Harvard, LSU or La Tech. Hope you baws are educating your daughters.

Yeah, this just so happened to be at UGA but could have happened on literally almost any college campus.. ive never been to Athens GA, but i obviously spent many years in the vicinity of the LSU campus and though it’s beautiful and relatively safe, as we all know just outside the gates on one side is a slum…. I am old enough to remember when a kid got kidnapped after a night out outside of Kirby Smith dorm and murdered, so it’s not just women… America as a whole is a shithole country and these incidents are just more proof .

Didn’t LSU have some issues with the area between the Greek theater and Kirby Smith? When I attended, it hadn’t been cleared out and I was told to never walk through there at night.

I forgot the nickname for that area. “Enchanted Forest” maybe?

First homicide on school grounds since 1983? Sounds pretty safe to me

At least it's not the 1980s anymore and it's much harder to get away with these type of crimes.

uga is the same. i never once felt unsafe, but it's a ridiculously poor area outside of the school. the freshman dorms are across the street from government housing.

Yes. The remnants of the old cypress swamp that it used to be before the Greek Theatre was built.....

While true, this is somewhat misleading- though I guess not to be unexpected with a college town this size. But Google Tara Baker and Jennifer Stone.

I took my son to Athens last year for a UGA tour. It’s a beautiful campus and has a lively downtown. But my god at the homeless people. It looked like the walking dead. I stopped at a nearby circle k & saw a crackhead pull a knife on a family. First time I’d ever seen anything like that, and I’m from BR.

Took my daughter for a tour 2 years ago and that was the major thing that struck me....homeless people begging on every corner in the downtown area. Was a major turnoff. Such a nice area, hard to believe they can't find a way to get that under control.

I've had a knife pulled on me by a junkie outside of the Circle K at Highland and State Street, so it happens in BR too.

Believe me. Mine will be Chris Kyle level by the time she’s college age. We aren’t raising some cosmo suburbanite yuppies.

About the same amount of time it took them to win another championship. Weird coincidence? I think not. Investigate them ncaa!

The local Athens Govt has no desire to fix any homeless issues, they are very liberal and often times very anti student and UGA in general.

It’s safer than the alternative large Universities in the state that aren’t suitcase schools. Basically GT and GSU, both with more surrounding homelessness and crime.

Then you’ve got Kennesaw and Southern.

If you want a safer feeling alternative that’s smaller consider GCSU. But it is the definition of a suitcase school (dead after noon on Friday until Late Sunday)

I saw this story earlier. Makes me so angry. UGA is absolutely one of my favorite campuses and I really like Athens. But, it's the same problem everywhere...drug addicts /homeless panhandlers/armed thugs have overtaken everywhere. I always smirk when I read "my kid will never go to LSU. It is not safe". Wake up...it is everywhere.
