What an awful call. He wasn’t even under the ball when the ump put his hand up.

It's also a dumbass rule, regardless.

If a player wants to drop a ball on purpose they should be able too. Make it interesting.

Instead of trying something interesting like that, they just give us shorter games.

THIS. If you induce a pop-up with runners on, you should have the chance at forcing the batter to run to first, a potential double play, "replacing" the runners, etc.

That’s why the rule exists, to protect the runners.

does not have to be under the ball…a fair fly ball that can be caught by normal effort in the infield area. Does not have to be caught by an infielder. A fly ball from a bunt negates the infield fly rule.

Infield fly rule has been in effect at all levels of baseball since the 19th century. Why change the rule now?

I realize that. My argument is, why protect them?

My only question with the call is that he was in the outfield.
But I don't know the whole rule inside and out.

Call has a lot of umpire discretion

The runners on the bases have to essentially stay on the bags or risk getting doubled off when caught. Instead, the fielder lets it fall then gets the easy double play at 3rd and 2nd. The runners on base have no chance without the infield fly rule. Why should a pop up in the infield be a double play?

Ask Braves fans about this,

Did the infielder signal for fair catch?

Why not? And honestly, I only ask this because its a 15-4 game and debating the infield fly rule is the silly shite that comes up during 15-4 baseball games in Febuary.

That’s not an argument, that’s a rhetorical question.
An argument would be, “the infield fly rule should be eliminated because . . .”
An argument would be the infield fly rule protects the baserunners because otherwise they would have no chance at either advancing or returning to base safely.

Understood. Treat it like a tailor made double play? Why protect runners on a pop up but not a ground ball? IDK. Same reason that 4 balls are a walk but 3 strikes are an out and the pitcher’s mound is 60’6” from home plate. Of these rules, IFR makes most sense to me.

they'd still have to execute the double play - why not make them finish the play their player hit into?
Could be interesting - make it a play that the defense has to execute properly to get the 'double play' - or screw up and give up the 'out.'
It turns just makes for one more ho-hum no-action play on the field.
Let 'em play what they hit into.
There are some times where it could be dicey to get the double play - and in trying it, there is a chance you could screw it up and get nobody out. === Makes the game more exciting.

Fair enough. Somewhat like dropping a fly ball in foul territory in the outfield with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs to avoid the tag up, hoping for a better outcome on the next pitch.
