Some people really seem unable to grasp the fact that basketball no longer moves the needle in this country. One and done destroyed college bball.

Financial decisions such as conference realignment are based on football only . The sport that pays everyone’s bills

The Choices The SEC should Make are in this order

1. UNC - Blue Blood Basketball, Avg Football , Good Regional Fit
2. NC State - Good in Football (they care about Winning) Good in Hoops Regional Fit
3. Clemson - A Football Fit , Social , Cultural and Regional match
4. Maybe Virginia - Maybe Duke or possible hold out for a OK State later down the line

1. FSU - new markets don't matter so much anymore. FSU is top 15 in athletic revenue and football viewership. They fit precisely in the SEC footprint, have rivalries with major SEC schools, and keeps the B1G from grabbing the best ACC football program in the South.

2. UNC - they will never care about football the way some SEC schools do, but UNC is the flagship school in a state of over 10.5 million people. It's geographically contiguous with the SEC footprint, it's a great school, Chapel Hill is a great college town, and they are good to elite at pretty much every other sport.

3. Clemson - a bit overhyped because of the recent football success, before Dabo arrived, Clemson wasn't really anything special. But obviously a great cultural fit and the passion is there. Clemson also has great rivalries (and rivalry potential) with a number of SEC schools.

4. Virginia Tech - great cultural fit, geographical contiguous with the SEC footprint, and gets the SEC into the Virginia market.

The alternates if any of the above get snagged by the B1G:

5. Virginia - obviously an elite school, but they really don't care about football and probably never will. Vanderbilt 2.0, but with a new, shiny set of media markets.

6. NC State - basically UNC with a slightly worse all-around athletic department, a much uglier campus, and not as highly regarded academically. Maybe a slightly better football program? Still, a good school and worth a look if UNC heads toward the B1G.

7. Miami - a decent football tradition, a fun city, and great recruiting grounds. Doesn't otherwise fit the SEC profile. Don't even have their own football stadium. Still, I think the B1G will give them a look because they fit the academic profile, sit in a great media market, and certainly have the financial resources to compete in football.

Probably not going to happen, but never say never:

8. Duke - a small, elite private school with blue blood hoops. Vanderbilt, but with an appealing basketball program and a shiny new media market. Does have decent brand value and a beautiful campus.

9. Georgia Tech - well, they've been here once. The Bulldogs so thoroughly own the state, that I don't really see the appeal of adding a pretty deflated Tech team to the SEC. Obviously a cultural fit with a lot of history with the SEC, but just not a lot going for them these days on the gridiron.

10. Louisville - just don't see the SEC having any compelling need to double dip in the state of Kentucky. Louisville has Big 12 written all over them.

Hell freezes over before they get an SEC invite:

11. Pitt - nothing says SEC like an urban school in Pennsylvania that doesn't even have its own football stadium.

12. Wake Forest - too small and too irrelevant at everything.

13. Boston College - and you thought Mizzou was a bad cultural fit.

14. Syracuse - might join forces with a Canadian league.

UF has had a losing record each of the last 3 years. Just about everyone has been owning the shite out of UF. Imagine having to live off your in-state archrival's accomplishments

So does Alabama, but you don't see Auburn fans riding Saban's dick over it

Pretty good summary and mostly in my order of preference if the SEC was to add teams. I'd probably take Clemson over UNC if only adding 2 schools though.

When the ACC finally does crumble, It makes you wonder if schools like Syracuse, Boston College and Pitt would ever consider just dropping football, or at least go independent...and rejoin the Big East? Seems to be working just fine for UConn.

That would make sense. Add Rice, Duke, Georgia Tech and see if William and Mary would bump up football.

If I was in charge of the SEC, UNC would be my top pick. Huge brand and have the potential to be really good at football. After that, Clemson has become a power and needs to be in. Virgins tech I think is overrated and kind of a boring program….just another auburn type. FSU is redundant with UF already in the league.

If I was in the B1G, UNC would also be my #1 target for the same reasons already mentioned (that’s assuming notre dame isn’t an option).

After UNC I would go with Miami because the B1G should be expanding their footprint into the Florida market. FSU doesn’t have the academics but Miami does. Also it’s an exciting program that is always going to recruit well because of location and bag$

I think UVa is the better option with the ACC. Have a traditional with Maryland, is great academically, part of the AAU, is somewhat (ish) close to DC which is Maryland's reason for the B1G, but gives them a foothold in LA, DC, Chicago, and NYC all of the important metros in America,, and has enough sports championships that are historic, but is not a threat in Football, which is good for tOSU, Michigan et al the conference

Nobody wants to watch UVa play football though…B1G already has too many similar programs like Purdue, Rutgers, etc. they need something more flashy and a program in the south would be refreshing

FSU and UF are similar programs historically though. A&M is in no way similar to Texas in terms of football perception, brand, success

Texas would be in the B10 now if the SEC had said no. That's why they're SEC now.
