Metro was a good hoops conference. Louisville and Memphis State had a really good rivalry in those days.

See, here's the thing: noone really wants this shite. What B1G fan wants there to be 30 teams in their conference? Who really wants the transfer portal outside of Texas & tOSU fans bc they have idiot boosters who will shell out millions in the offseason to get the players they want? How many fans are like me in that they're utterly disgusted with what has happened to college football?

You’re asking the average fan to have some sort of perspective. Good luck.

Clemson is a natural fit, but FSU really rubs a lot of folks the wrong way in the SEC.

Man I feel exactly the opposite. I don't think Clemson provides any value at all.

Loved me some Metro in the 80's. Living in East Central MS we could pick up Hattiesburg, and of course, they'd show Metro games on Wednesdays and Saturdays. My first live college basketball games were school trips when my middle school team went to watch USM play Top 5( might've been 1 can't remember) Memphis State led by Keith Lee, Vincent Askew, William Bedford, Andre Turner, and Baskerville Holmes. They went to the Final 4 that year. The next year our high school team went to watch USM play Virginia Tech and Dell Curry. Tech was pretty solid and went to the tourney that year. USM won the NIT the next year, so they were decent. Good times

ETA:Looked it up and Memphis was ranked #4

It could have been a great football conference based in the South. FSU, South Carolina, Louisville, Va Tech, and maybe adding schools like TCU and Miami, it could have been more relevant than the ACC in football.

Exactly, nobody with a brain wants this. This is being done for one reason and one reason only, TV $$$. These networks are absolutely dying and the only thing they have left is live sports. They have given out massively stupid TV contracts and they are desperately trying to make them work. They think that these two massive conferences give them the best chance at that. I would disagree with that. I think the more fanbases get pushed out, the less eyeballs you will have in general.

If GT gets left out, I sure as hell am not going to tune into the random week 5 oregon vs penn state game. I more than likely won't watch any cfb whereas now I am somewhat still tuned in to the greater landscape.

If you go independent you’re completely locked out of the playoff picture as you can’t schedule anybody later in the season… also can’t get a good tv deal

Notre Dame will be Big Ten soon because that’s whom they play anyway

This will be the story for the remaining 80+ teams in FBS being locked out. If you’re basically told “your program doesn’t mean squat,” why bother?

A TV exec was interviewed anonymously and said flat out that they know they will lose some or most of the smaller school fans but don’t care because they think they can get big market casual fans to tune into premier matchups for sports betting purposes.

Anyone who doesnt despise TV execs the way they despise politicians isn’t paying attention.

No FSU football recruit grew up wanting to play in the far away places of the Big 10...there are only two marquee teams in the current Big 10 and the shine of having to travel to the west coast for games (in any sport) will quickly fade. And you are just thinking about football...

Geographically, it is a disaster...

This rationale seems destined to fail, and in any case if sports betting was the catalyst, it’s already easier to bet on smaller matchups.

Well yeah the smaller schools don’t have as many fans to lose… hence they’re smaller

It’s calculus and we’re all just numbers

Football may pay the bills, but our Olympic sports programs will likely erode as well, and hello lousier finishes in the 2028, 32, 36 Games

If I had to choose between the package deals, Clemson and FSU or UNC and VT, I’m going with the two states that the SEC doesn’t have a footprint in yet.

We already have south Carolina and Florida. Who’s to say that UNC and VT don’t thrive with the check they’ll get from the SEC?

North Carolina is a very big state and it is majority pro Tarheels. Virginia isn’t as big of a player but I’m sure VT has enough of a following that’ll move the needle if they’re playing an SEC slate

But they won’t

This is about big football games and Clemson and FSU play them. Miami used to and NCSU could one day
