to state the obvious. No one is going to win by casting a white male.

I'm pretty sure Kathleen Kennedy is not a casting director.

I'm also reasonably confident the nominees will be for the casting of entire films, not one person, white male or not.

How is this good in this day and age?

It will become an award for rewarding “inclusiveness.”

Just watch.

the next casting director that swaps out the white dude lead for a black chick, casts some twink on its own personal trans-unicorn journey, and an actual gay hobbit in supporting roles, will win a gold statue. I can't wait for the acceptance speech

I think they should stop giving speeches because it is potentially offensive to the mute and the hearing impaired. And stop broadcasting because it isn't equally enjoyable for the blind.

Great documentary about casting directors called Casting By. It focuses mostly on Marion Dougherty. There has been a robust effort by movie directors to keep the title “Casting Director” out of film credits. In the doc you’ll see directors angrily demanding that casting personnel are not directors of any kind. It’s amazing that they’d add this category.

I am thinking this award would go to the casting director and not the actors, correct?

If it was given this year, it would likely go to Oppenheimer or The Holdovers. Hardly films driven by any inclusion mandates or diversity pressure. Seems a bit odd to me, especially as an Academy Member. Better served in the SAG awards.

Maybe. But I feel like these new inclusion standards are just the tip of the spear.

It really doesn’t matter affect me though. I don’t watch nearly as many new movies as i used to. I’m pretty close to viewing the Oscars how I view the Grammys.

Some movies that come immediately to mind are
1. The Godfather
2. One Flew Over The Cucko's Nest
3. The Deer Hunter

Whatever woke concerns notwithstanding, this is massively overdue.

IMO, casting is VASTLY more relevant than "how good is the acting?", as my main contention has always been that essentially it's just table stakes to be a good actor in major films.

The shorthand version is: sure, Christopher Walken is a good/great actor. That's literally just irrelevant as to why or why not he wasn't cast as the lead in Cast Away or A River Runs Through It.
Well, I'm sure the reality of it will be that whoever casts the most diverse group, will win

But really, do you look at a singular role
(Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones),

or do you look at the whole group
(Man from UNCLE- Henry Cavill as Napoleon Solo, Army Hammer as Illya Kuryakin, Alicia Vikander as Gabby, Hugh Grant as Waverly, Elizabeth Debicki as Victoria, etc etc)?

I would say GROUP, using Man From UNCLE as an example. That whole ensemble worked well.

The RAZZY version of this award would go to whoever cast Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor; that had to be the worst casting this century.

Yep.

Just because you hire a solid, A-list actor to play a part doesn't mean that he/she is right for it. Case in point: Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte. Great actor, one of the best of his generation, but completely wrong for the role.

Then you have genius casting for films you don't necessarily think about the acting such as Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man. That might be the single greatest piece of casting by a casting director in the 21st century. Completely nailed it.

This will simply be a vehicle to recognize the most diverse cast.

This will simply be one more category in which the best picture nominees are nominated.

Movies like oppenheimer and killers of the flower moon seem much more likely to receive recognition. Movies with giant casts who bring in memorable actors for small roles, i.e. Josh Hartnett and Benny Safdie in Oppie and Sturgill Simpson and Brendan Fraser in flower moon.

The real art of casting directors is not necessarily in the choice of the A list stars. Sometimes casting directors have zero choice in the lead roles. The art comes in the casting of supporting players that add to the fell and success of the movie.
The Cohen Brothers movies excel at this.

Didn't downvote, but I do think maybe these films aren't really quite the mold for what this thread/category is about. Precious was only ever about a poor black family in extreme social circumstances and Brokeback Mountain was only ever a gay propaganda flick. They didn't even pretend to be otherwise. Granted the BB main actors are straight in real life, so I guess that's kind of 'inclusive'.

But in order to win this new category, the Precious main actress would have to mixed race and likely be gay in both real life and in the film. The BB actors would actually be women who've transitioned over to being men, who then have mutual 'coming of life moment finding out that they're gay, and one of the them has to be a blatantly practising Atheist. Casting award nomination, here we come!
