Great post. Very nicely put.

Expect Game Pass to undergo structural changes that removes first party games as day one releases. It's just not fiscally viable anymore for Microsoft.

Your post highlights exactly why this would be a stupid decision.

Microsoft can't make this happen by putting exclusives on other consoles.

According to court filings, Microsoft's subscription model was doing just fine for the Xbox with Game Pass. Would be odd to assume that trend is gone before even putting ABK games on the service.

Negative, Sony is quickly shifting to PC for even faster releases. Hell Sony just said last week PC, cloud, mobile is their future.

I agree with you. And I'm not saying I agree with Microsoft's upcoming decision.

Even if they come out and stand strong behind Xbox hardware next week, the writing is on the wall if they start putting their games on other consoles.

What is the Xbox value proposition at that point, especially if first party titles no longer show up on GP on day one? There isn't one. The value of Xbox hardware becomes severely diluted, sales completely crater, and Microsoft's C-suite decides it's time to close up shop because the hardware division is stuck in the red.

That's the path we're on.

Microsoft doesn't want to dig their feet in and prop up Xbox hardware with exclusives and try to move consoles, especially now with all of their increased costs by trying to absorb a $70 billion company. They want a ROI now, and don't want to spend 10+ years trying to build back Xbox hardware to where it was during the 360 days. Phil might want that - but the big shareholders, the board, and Nadella don't.

This feels like Microsoft’s Dreamcast moment.

I agree. This would be the end of Xbox consoles.

I understand this desire, but it is incredibly short-sighted and I believe it will actually end up worse for profits in the short term instead of better. If they end up going this route, it would say to me that they are not aware of the backlash they would get from Xbox fans.

I don't buy PlayStation consoles because I don't like the way Sony treats gamers. A move like this would remove me as an Xbox consumer also. I guess I'd have to join the PC master race or just be Nintendo only. I know I'm not the only one.

Poorly, imo. Not a fan of Sony at all and my decision not to buy PlayStation consoles has nothing to do with Xbox or any sort of fandom. I've felt this way for years, but their actions during the MS/ABK purchase just solidified my opinion of them. Hopefully I live for another 60 years or so, so I won't say never, but at the moment I can't think of anything that would convince me to ever buy another PlayStation.

I've further stated my position on that in the past so that's all I'll say here. Don't want to derail the thread.

Sounds like business to me. I feel like they would be doing a disservice if they folded and just let that happen without a fight.

You know it’s not their fault MS can’t put out quality exclusives. I’d say MS is the ones failing their gamers….

Started out that way. Didn't end that way.

Meh. MS killed Sony on first party exclusives in 2023 and, depending on whether or not these rumors are true, is set to continue that trend in 2024.

PlayStation only had one first party exclusive in 2023. There is no comparison. Xbox destroyed Sony on first party exclusives in 2023 and PS doesn't have a great lineup of first party exclusives coming out in 2024 either.

They make too many quality exclusives that makes it difficult to figure out what game to play. Xbox hasn’t had that problem in a decade
