Lots of racing is in a fire suit in a car in the heat. It requires a lot of physical strength, agility and stamina. Most racers take a beating on their body as well and it’s highly competitive.

How would these F1 drivers do if you put them on a bicycle and made them race in the Tour de France? Keep in mind that things like vision, reflexes, coordination and focus would presumably transfer over. They would get left in the dust because of the whole muscle and stamina thing.
Lots of F1 drivers cycle. I think Mark Webber and Jenson Button may have been triathletes.
And lots of very athletic people would get left in the dust by a pro. Have you ridden with a pro? The pace of some of our morning rides with the semi-pros passing through is insane. I can't even fathom the level between those dudes and pro cyclists.

To be just decent they have to have extreme levels of fitness, laser mental focus that can't go interrupted for 2 hours, world-class reaction times and hand/eye/foot coordination.
They basically strap into a ground bound jet and enter a 2 hour dog fight. They have to handle up to 6.5G braking and up to 5G cornering hundreds of times an hour while maneuvering a car with pinpoint accuracy.
The term athlete is a tortured moniker that people love to argue about. Being an F1 driver requires elite if not world-class athleticism to do well along with the level of mental focus that some of the most difficult sports require. One thing that really raises the bar is they have to do it for ~2 hours straight, no time-outs, no substitutions just the corners coming up relentlessly.
IMO anything that requires elite level of athletism to do means you are an athlete if you are one of the best on the world at it.

This is a terrible comparison. Of course an athlete specializing in one sport would get smoked in another sport.
Fair enough. Let's use a different hypothetical. Take average sized players from every sport,(football, baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, tennis, wrestling, etc.) including auto racing, and have them compete in a 2 day decathalon - the recognized standard for "greatest athlete in the world".
The drivers are getting smoked. Sure they will beat the golfers and some others and put up a good fight but they aren't going to measure up to what we consider professional athletes. Doing something with a car is simply not the same thing as doing something with your body.

They stay seated the entire time and drive a vehicle.
That is not athletic

Wow, this is even more stupid.

It would be a retard-fest.

Rally Germany is on my list of things to check out in 2024.

I used to race Rotax Karts about 20 years ago, and even those beat the crap out of your body if you aren't physically prepared. Going up to 105 MPH 2-3" off the ground in karts through banked turns, s-curves, etc. First time I ever hit the track was outside of DFW and only drove for about an hours. My ribs were so beat up I could barely breath for the next couple of days. And wearing the firesuit, helmet, etc completely drains your body fluids. Saw people getting airlifted off multiple tracks after accidents. F1 guys are on an entirely different level of atheletic capability. My 2c.

If you can find those old rally videos from Speed, those were amazing.
The guy in the video I linked, Gilles Panizzi, was amazing on asphalt and tarmac. And those Peugeot 206 was an amazing car.

their bank account doesn’t care what you call them

I had a roommate who was a big fan of Colin McRae. That was my intro into rally. Horrible tragedy what happened with him and his family.

Riding the lightning for that long you had better had your stuff together physically and mentally or you are NGMI
They are athletes

Race Car Drivers
Golfers
Bowlers
All fall under the same category.
They are skilled professionals, but definitely not athletes.

Absolutely athletes. Workout regimen is amazing, most people couldn’t handle the about of G’s they deal with
Posted on 2/3/24 at 3:47 pm to SteelerBravesDawg
Nobody is saying what they do is easy. They are freaks of nature and what they do requires an incredible amount of talent and ANY other ordinary person would be embarrassed even trying to get behind the wheel of one of those cars. That goes without saying.
We are debating general "athleticism". Are they more physically athletic than the average man? Of course they are. But they mostly don't measure up to other professional athletes. That's the only point I'm trying to make.

I don't think other professional athletes could do what they do.
Which makes all drivers even more of an athlete.

Yeah they do. They meet every prerequisite we imagine for 'athletes.'
Maybe you have some preconceived notion in your head that goes something along the lines of the most athletic basketball player in the world would immediately be able to transition to another sport and perform it at a high-level with little training. But that line of logic doesn't translate to skill-based sports which also require athleticism to complement those skills. The coordination and reaction times required by F1 drivers is already elite, and their physical fitness is tailored to the demands of driving racecars at extremely high speeds.
In addition, do we really think that a fantastic basketball player, who we might regard as one of the best athletes in the world, would immediately be able to drive a racecar to even a semi-professional level? That would be asinine.

Modern F1 drivers are for sure athletes.
F1 has been athletes for awhile past modern era and my old man standards. NASCAR on the other hand had people like Jimmy Spencer competing at the highest level not too long ago by my old man standards.

They have insane physical reaction times and insane mental and physical conditioning that goes way beyond normal man that qualify them as athletes.
