Special team survey on punt return strategy

I'm being 100% serious on this. I think most everybody is tired of these soccer style punters kicking the ball 30 yards and expecting it to roll another 20 because the returner can't catch the ball in the air. So here is the poll...upvote for my suggestion...downvote for status quo. If you think this post is stupid, please save that downvote for my next post. Trying to get an accurate read of the sentiment of the options.
Have the old twin safeties like in the old days...except instead of side by side have them forward and back. The obvious advantage is IF you have two guys who can catch the ball, the 20 yard roll is ended. Also, if the punt is to the deep guy, the shallow returner is in perfect position to block (Upvote post)
Keep the one returner only with the advantage being that it is hard enough to find one guy who can catch a punt, now you are saying you have two (Downvote post)
I will say that Michigan utilized twin safeties in the second half of one game...either Alabama or Washington. Hey, just be glad I didn't bring up punting on 3rd down which used to be pretty common on 3rd and long.

I have long thought that tgry need to revive the use of twin safeties. I agree with your strategy.
Put a sure handed guy up and shade him to the kicker’s strong side. He should be a guy that can block or tackle in case there’s a fake.

LSU thinking is I would rather give up 10/15 yards because Jayden will make that up rather than risk a fumble

A point for sure, but Jayden Daniels is gone. Field position is going to be a lot more important even if Nussmeier pans out well. I don't like the thought of giving up 15 yards on change of possession if there is a viable solution. BTW, I will take up for Clayton a bit who has been maligned a little. Was he a feared returner? No. But did the guy ever fumble a fair catch in like 2 years? Maybe once tops and I think he might have recovered it himself.
I will quote everyone's favorite coach (Frank Broyles) telling Keith Jackson this on a broadcast several years ago after a ball hit the ground and rolled 30 yards, "Keith, Keith, you can't let the ball hit the ground!"

I think its a good idea EXCEPT that LSU can barely find 1 guy to field a punt cleanly. Now we have to find 2?!?
In all honestly though, the short returner would mostly be a fair catch guy. The coverage team would be on him way too quickly unless its a legit line drive right at him.
We sort of did this when I was in HS (I rocked in HS, check tape) because HS punters are so erratic. The short returner just becomes a blocker if the punt goes over their head and he can pick up anyone who pops free or double a particularly good gunner.

I guess. I'm talking about punters who address the ball from the side and not straight on. Soccer players do that. I have never seen a rugby game in my life, thank God. But if rugby does that, let's use that term.

I don't think it is a terrible idea, however I think it opens up the possibility to run into a ton of communication problems. You already see problems with one returner running into guys trying to block for him, not even catch the ball. Now imagine the possibility of two guys both trying to catch the ball. I don't disagree with the premise, but I don't really trust college players to do that successfully. And with how BK has coached special teams so far, I don't see him wanting that risk.

You play like baseball. The outfielder (deep return guy) can call of the infielder (short return guy).

They should adopt the NFL rule that no blockers can pass the LOS until after the ball is kicked. Enough with this rugby shite.

The roll is a benefit but not the main purpose. If you are hoping for a 50 yard punt the returner is likely fair catching. You don't see man returners let a ball hit at the 50.

I get that that is how you would like it to work. But think about how many times you see the return man yelling at one of his blockers to get out of the way on a punt and they still end up way too close.

Yep, I mentioned that in my original post that you would need 2 players capable of catching the ball. And as you said, the upback would just be to fair catch the ball...like Clayton did. As you said {clipped that part} the upback could be a blocker and God knows, surely he wouldn't be guilty of blocking in the back since he is in perfect position the entire time.

Don't want myself to get off topic but you bring up a good point in a way. I don't know the rule about roughing the punter for these punters who run 5 yards before kicking the ball, but IMO there should never be a call for roughing or running into the kicker for guys who do that. It should be once the punter moves out of regular punt formation, it is open season on him because he is theoretically a runner then.

they have to punt the ball for it to be roughing/running the kicker

Right, I know that. What I'm talking about is once the punter starts "running", whether it be part of his routine or just actually faking, hopefully some of his protections go away. I'm not talking the blatant late hit but the rusher should be able to say something like, "I had no idea when or if he was punting the ball." With the standard punter routine, you obviously know that. Similar to QBs where inside the pocket you have more innate protection than when you start rolling out and become a potential runner.

With all the punt catch issues we've had, I thought you were going to suggest just all out rushing with 11 and seeing what happens.

I'm more of a Clayton fan than most here. If I remember correctly, the Nicholas player for LSU had the biggest punt return of the year for about 25 yards. He came in from the side and caught the short punt on the run against A&M I believe. But Clayton saved LSU literally several hundreds of yards of field position by simply not letting the ball bounce very often. And he did it reliably too with either 0 or 1 turnover in like 2 years.
Actually, I was going to bring up the "punt rush" but I don't think one more guy dropped back would ever make an attempted block difference. Because quite frankly, LSU seems incapable of hardly ever blocking a punt.

you can tackle rugby punters up to the point he punts it. Rugby punting doesn’t really get you added protection.
pretty much up to the point he kicks the ball he is a live runner
if he drops it to kick and you tackle
him before he kicks it I think it’s just a fumble.
