Does anyone know where I can buy deer blood? At one time I know it was possible.
I’m looking to start training a puppy to track wounded deer.

Blood is blood. A local butcher shop should be able to set you up with some beef blood.

What kind of dog did you end up getting?

You don't need blood to train a dog. We follow a blood trail because it is what we can see. Dogs do not smell and follow blood. They follow the scent of the animal.
I have trained dogs for years. Use deer hides, hooves, tails etc. There are several very helpful books on the subject

I haven’t got a dog yet.
Is the deer hide from Dog Bone any good to start working with?

Get deer legs off of deer that ran after the shot. The dog will learn to track the scent of the interdigital gland of a wounded deer.

If I get a dog next month, what do I use to substitute for the deer hide, deer liver and deer leg until hunting season?

Squirrels, birds, chicken legs, etc.

You might have waited too long because deer season is over, but you could probably contact any place that processes deer. I bet they would give you all of the hides and legs that you want.

This with their scent works just fine, also save the blood from packs of deer meat as well. Go to the butcher shop and get some beef liver to start the pup on once or twice to gain that interest.
The key is to train them on all of it, interdigital, blood, dandruff from hair, they have to be able to be able to put it all together. Interdigital scent is only on the ground when the hoof touches the ground. What if the deer makes a big jump across a fallen tree top ? There may be a speck of blood, some guts, some hair, they can connect the dots.

Don't need deer blood. Go to the store and buy a beef liver.
You aren't training him to track blood. You are training him to scent track. Dogs don't need blood to track a deer.

Use calf liver…..tie on string. Drag on ground…..cut tiny pieces along track as treat…professional tracker gave me this advice…

Dogs don’t trail blood they’re trailing the adrenaline scent a wounded animals gives off.
