Just do not is all I can say. Misuse of company property is the easiest way a company can get rid of someone. My work computer and cell are strictly work use. Hell, I tell my wife to not even call me on my work cell.
Unless his device is named “Bob Smith’s iPhone” then I’m not sure how the IT department would be able to tell who the device belonged to.
If the company was really worried about employees dicking around on the internet though, they’d just have the IT department block the websites people were wasting time on. Lots of company networks have social media websites, Youtube, Amazon, etc blocked on the company wifi network.

Use a VPN
They can see the sites you go to. I’d suggest Reddit for the pron. using a VPN might be against company policy, it is here where I work. But honestly if you get fired for breaking some documented WiFi use rule, you’re really getting fired for something else.

What kind of job do you have where you can watch HBO Max at work?
Never spent time on a production platform in the GoM I see.

Or they don't think anyone would be fricking stupid enough to login and watch movies over their wi-fi during work hours, while at work.

Which carries an additional expense that shouldn't ne necessary.

What if there are 50 employees all with personal phones connected to a single WiFi network? How do they know it’s your phone?
They can see your MAC address and they can bump that MAC from the network. And when you can’t get on the WiFi what do you do? You go see the network or IT team, then you’re busted.

I don’t use use it. I turn wifi off when i get to work. They don’t need to see I scroll Tiger Droppings or anywhere else. I also don’t use their internet for personal use unless I’m looking up something real quick. Some folks bring their tablets and hook up to the wifi or let their phones run on it.

Theres free ones out there and not hard to use. Put a TOR browser/Onion on you phone. The browser used to access the deep or dark web they have VPNs already installed and ready to use. All ya have to to is turn it on. You can visit any website on the clear web along with all the other shite you cant with a regular browser. Seems complicated but super simple!! Stay off the darkweb markets!!

I would never work for a company that does this.

As someone who works for a fortune 50 company and has had to fire people for misuse of company equipment, improper internet use (porn, vpns, jigglers), don’t mess around with it.
They know everything and it isn’t worth losing your or your wife’s job. Guaranteed it is outlined in her employment contract.

I guess if you have to ask it’s probably no.

If your company is looking to get rid of you they will find a way. If not, then surf away.

You’re telling me that a company who deems it necessary to have an in-house IT staff that monitors network usage wouldn’t already be providing said IT staff with security tools that can at least do what my $100 router from Best Buy can?
ETA: not saying it’d be a good idea for OP to be streaming HBO at work. But I don’t see how the IT department will be able to know its him if he’s streaming from a personal device and said device name isn’t something personally identifying. If all his IT department has to work with is “iPhone 13” as a device name and the IP/MAC address, they can’t tie it to a specific employee unless that employee is the only one in the office at a particular time or someone actually witnesses them streaming at work.

Yes...I know. Labor = $
Just because they don't block it doesn't mean they don't care if people access it. Mitigation and prevention costs money and it's naive to think just because something is not blocked than it's okay to use.

Yeah I think I’ll take that advice and just download the shows so I don’t have to watch it on their wifi. I really don’t think it’s a problem but I’m not going to take chances anymore.

That's not really how security works. They don't make assumptions that you are smart enough to not frick around, they protect anyway.
My rule of thumb with some common sense, if they aren't blocking it, it's probably safe. That's the rule for my work PC, but I use it for 99% work purposes, I may Google something I know is safe so I don't have to grab my phone.
Cell I stay off company networks. Now that I work from home, I will even disconnect my phone from WiFi while my work PC is connected to VPN if I'm searching something NSFW.

Just know that IT can tell or figure out what you are doing on their network and your company most likely has a policy prohibiting or severely limiting your use of their internet service for non-work related activities.
If you choose to ignore that, then you run the risk of being fired for doing so.

Probably the best resolution. If they are looking for a reason to fire you at least it won't be for tigerdroppings or watching movies during work time.

From now in I will either use my cellular or download the episodes to my tablet before going to work. frickers ain’t getting me for enjoying my work time.
