Offenses are a lot tougher to defend. The number of screens being ran on every possession to create open looks is at an all time high league wide. Defenders aren't allowed to run through them for the most part

It’s always been easier to score on the perimeter - it just wasn’t a focus due to a skill gap. Guys didn’t shoot the 3 well when it became part of the game, so it wasn’t a good strategy.

Don't think anyone will argue against there being more skill/talent in the league now. That's natural progression of human development and technological advances in training.
As for the strategy, also a factor but it includes the changing of rules. If there's more skill and current players could've done this anyway, why change the rules to make offense easier for entertainment purposes? Seems the rules changes are giving the league exactly the entertainment product they were striving for.
Rules have lead to 7'0 guys practicing 3s more than post moves not skill. David Robinson scored 70 once without shooting 3s. Could they? Could Robinson have trained himself to shoot the 3 at the rate these guys do? Absolutely. Scoring up trends very commonly are associated with rules being changed to get exactly that end result. In every sport.

Are you sure this is all due to rules? There are a lot more good shooters so it's harder to pack the paint and leave the perimeter open. Embiid scored 73 tonight.
The thing is unless you have an embiid you end up trading 2s for 3s and losing because ur big won't score 73

Bird was 29 at the time and he wasn't guarding Jordan. But if anyone thinks the rules of the day didn't dictate the style of play, and the type of players in the league, they are nuts.

The Undertaker said it perfectly. When he was coming up in the 80s and 90s, guys would have guns in their travel bags and be drinking beers in the locker room. Now the guys are playing video games and drinking healthy shakes. It doesn’t speak to talent, as the guys today are extremely talented and dedicated. It’s the mindset. It’s less grit and grime and just more polished.

You’re 100% correct, if the theory that players are just more advanced were true there would be equally advanced defensive players who could stop offense but there isn’t because it’s the rules that have caused the offensive explosion not the players.
