But they aren't winning this year, and he expires next year, so they probably want to hold onto him in the offseason and next years trade deadline to use to make a big trade, not just simply offload him right now.
That's the issue i see, what player is so bad right now compared to his contract that has at least 3 years left that a good team wants to give up a 1st to get rid of right now?

Zeller/EJ/lottery protected 1st for Richards/Cha '25 & 28 2nds and give us back our '27 2nd they own.
that leaves us $1.6M to sign Matt Ryan and somoene else to get to 14.

Can we even sign 2 guys for only 1.6m? If not, i cant see them going into the tax for Richards

There’s still also the possibility of moving Naji for picks, which frees up money to sign Ryan and do a veteran buyout or a trade for a small contract. There are plenty of teams with either a TE or enough space to take him without sending anything back.
NYK, IND, or ORL are all teams with lots of 2nds that would make sense as trade partners.
If we don’t see a realistic veteran buyout option, moving Naji for someone like Isaiah Jackson or Nick Richards would make sense for both teams. Gives us a little more versatility and has the added bonus of taking a club out of Willie’s bag.

We do, but does that count against the cap or no?

Would be impossible to stay under the tax, cannot sign two players with 1.6 million

Yes, all salary counts towards the cap

But...those contract amounts also always count towards your cap number.

And they could move him in the offseason if they wanted to do that. They aren't in danger of being in the tax next year.
I could see them moving him to have cap space though, but then you could make the argument having him would be just as beneficial so you could do a S&T for whoever it is they wanted to sign, but the only available top tier FA this summer looking to move will be Donovan Mitchell.
and the Nets have cap holds for Dinwiddie of $30M, O'Neale for $18M and Claxton for $16M, so they aren't going to have cap space to sign him outright unless they resigned Dinwiddie for $20M and let O'Neale go.
I'm sure the Cavs would rather expiring Simmons and a 1st than cap space considering there wouldn't be much out there to use it on.
The Nets have nice future 1sts, but they have much of nothing over the next 3 years.
This is what the Nets have:
2024 - nothing
2025 - Phx 1st, OKC 1st (likely b/c of swap option), Miami 2nd
2026 - nothing
2027 - own 1st is a swap option for Houston, phx 1st
2028 - own 1st, phx or Philly 1st, own 2nd
2029 - own 1st, Dallas 1st, own 2nd

Does the full contract count towards the cap?
I know if the minimum is say $1.6M, but they sign mid year they are only getting paid half of that. Does the full $1.6 still go towards the cap?
I don't know if this is right or not, but on Spotrac you can manage a roster via trades and signings and see how it affects the cap/tax.
If you do the Richards for Zeller/EJ trade, and then sign JRE from the two way, it doesn't count JRE's contract to the cap.

What team has a really bad contract they need to get rid of?
I think that Lonzo has a player option for $21 million next season. Wouldn't the Bulls like to get off that?
For Charlotte, it offers the nice option of putting the Ball brothers together.

Two way players that get converted midseason only count as much as the prorated amount is per game left (I think cap number is 26k per game or so)
If you sign veteran minimum players though their entire yearly number counts against the cap/tax.
So technically if we convert Ryan AND JRE we could make it work, just would have to do it a little bit further into the season as they would both have about a million dollar cap hit each if we were to convert them right now.

I did think about Lonzo, but i wasn't sure he was even able to be traded with the health issues. I guess charlotte could just waive the physical and health issues to make it happen.
But the Bulls look more inclined to blow it all up, so i doubt they are interested in giving up assets to get off 1 year of Lonzo.

that's what i thought. JRE and Karlo can be the two signings.
Posted on 1/23/24 at 11:37 am to TeddyPadillac
Karlo is not on a two way deal so his cap number would be the full 0 season vet minimum which is around 1.2 million or so
So basically if we being Karlo over we would have about 1.4 million left under the cap as we currently stand. We could convert both Ryan AND JRE with that number, but we would be hard pressed to sign anyone else off the street.

That may be the move then. EJ + Zeller + 24 1st for Richards + 2-3 2nds and then convert JRE & Ryan to deals to stay under the tax.
Posted on 1/23/24 at 12:12 pm to Balsamic_duck
Then the next question is, do we really want to pay our 3rd center 5 million a year?
I think our most likely move is we try for Allen and strike out, then just being over Karlo and convert Ryan and roll with what we have.

Mitchell isn't a free agent this summer.
