The Advocate- LSU still needs a special teams coordinator and tight ends coach…. Bob Diaco, who remained listed on LSU’s staff, was the outside linebacker’s coach and special teams coordinator last season. While Diaco led the meetings and practices, assistant coaches helped with certain units, as Kelly used a decentralized approach for handling special teams.

The Advocate didn’t mentioned what Kelly’s plan will be for LSU’s 2024 special teams, will he assign a coach from within or hire one but the plan in 2023 was a big failure, maybe not a total failure but definitely bad enough it doesn’t need repeating.

BK hasn’t had good special units in either of his years so far. The fact that our offense was so good and defense was so bad probably helped hide this. We rarely punted and rarely had to field punts.

We haven’t had a return game since DJ Chark. We desperately need better blocking and a threat to return.

I don’t get why McMahon isn’t back - he clearly still wants to coach and was great here.

Yeah, the plan for last year was well documented and seemed like a bad idea at the time. Some of the Kelly fan boys cheered it, but not many. Hopefully it gets fixed this year, but I haven't heard any talk on it.

With the offense being able to score at will, and only having to field opposing team kickoffs, ST got pretty much ignored.

While field position was more important with Les ball, it wasn’t as important with JD5 at the helm, and hello Nuss driving the bus 98 yards.

THAT SAID, I have a distinct feeling that ST in 24 will decide a game for us.

LSU will be breaking in a new Kickoff Specialist and a new Punter this year…luckily Ramos adds some stability to the mix.

I don't like Kelly's approach. Why do we need two DL and two DB coaches. I would much rather a dedicated ST coach.

Multiple people leading it means no one was leading it. Not a good look there ole Brian.

Kelly was wise. He realized that special teams were not that important anymore. As long as you can get punts off without huge returns and make your field goals the rest hardly matters. Offenses chew up yards so fast that field position is far less important than ball security. Were our special teams bad? Did they cost us any games? Kinda and No.

Here's a wild stat according to ncaa.com

LSU only had TWO punts returned against us (non fair catches) all season for a grand total of -1 yards.

Second only to UGA who somehow had ZERO punts returned against them all season.

It’s hard to believe a high profile coach we hire brought with him. some of the worst special teams, and defensive coaches we have ever had. Just look at the statistics- what Brian Kelly has done so far has not worked in both aspects of the game. Were Kelli and the team in a hole when he got here? We will give him that but the defensive/special teams coaching has been atrocious.
