Justice Department Finds ‘Significant Failure’ in Uvalde Police Response

In a report, the department blames “cascading failures of leadership, decision-making, tactics, policy and training” in the Texas school shooting that left 21 people dead.

A Justice Department investigation released on Thursday found that a near-total breakdown in policing protocols hindered the response to the 2022 school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that left 21 people dead — but the gravest error was the reluctance of officials to confront the killer during the first few minutes of the attack.
The department blamed “cascading failures of leadership, decision-making, tactics, policy and training” for the delayed and passive law enforcement response that allowed an 18-year-old gunman with a semiautomatic rifle to remain inside a pair of connected fourth grade classrooms at Robb Elementary School for 77 minutes before he was confronted and killed.
The “most significant failure,” investigators concluded, was the fateful decision by local police officials to classify the incident as a barricaded standoff rather than an “active-shooter” scenario, which would have demanded instant and aggressive action regardless of the danger to those responding or the lack of appropriate weapons to confront the gunman.
The nearly 600-page report largely mirrors the conclusions of a state investigation released last July. The federal report, compiled from 260 interviews and nearly 15,000 documents and videos, represents the most comprehensive assessment of a killing spree that helped spur passage of new federal gun control legislation and continues to haunt a community traumatized by the slaughter and the inadequacy of the police response.
quote:
The report, known as a critical incident review and initiated 20 months ago at the request of the town’s former mayor, Don McLaughlin, also found fault with local and state officials who provided incomplete and at times inaccurate information to the families of students and the news media.

I could have come to that conclusion in much fewer than 600 pages

Well no shite.
Every single member of that department should be fired. Especially the guy that had a shot at shooter walking into school but didn’t take it because he needed “permission”.

Wonder how much this investigation cost taxpayers? Any amount is too much when it was clear as fricking day that they bitched out that day, and made the decision to protect themselves at the cost of those kid's lives.
Hang em. We didn't need a years long investigation.

this is what made me lose any remaining faith in police in the united states
not only are do they step all over our rights, but they are massive pussies as well

It isn't that clear cut, and unfortunately, is more likely a crapshoot. Shortly there after the Nashville police dropped that whack job with the quickness....no second thought, no standing around grab assing. They got the job done.

No shite. I hope we spent tons of taxpayer dollars on that study.

That seems.....egregious. Not sure how it wouldn't be labeled an active shooter situation when there was....an active fricking shooter walking around a school shooting children.

The new PBS Frontline episode released in December is quite a watch. So maddening to watch the footage and interviews w a lot of the men on site who did nothing.

I’m not sure what good that finding will even do….. it still won’t bring those kids and teachers back…. And those that survived will be traumatized forever…

I would venture to say that, unfortunately, most small town police depts are clueless on events like this.

Was about to post the same thing. 20 months and 600 pages to tell everyone what they already knew.

And not a single person will be held legally liable because of case law.
The most maddening part of all of this was that the parents knew time was critical but the police prevented them from storming the school all while they gave the perp ample time to kill.
We are all on our own. Do what you have to do to protect you and yours.

They shouldn't be. Didn't those involved in the Uvalde response just go through training for this exact scenario a few weeks or months prior?

Causal investigations are not conducted to find fault they are conducted to find out what went wrong and develop processes to prevent it happening again. Anyone watching the video knows they fricked up. The point of causal evaluation should be to prevent others from fricking up in the same manner.

If done correctly it may help next time in another place. If all it does is find fault with people with little regard for processes it is a waste of time.
