Michael Penix may be the single most impactful player in recent CFB history

Cam is probably #2, but he had a top 10 recruiting class in the 4-year window needed to win a national title.
Penix took a dogshit Indiana program to #9 in the nation. They were terrible before he got there and terrible after he left.
At Washington, he is basically breaking 25 yr old metrics for the national title chase.

Because we watch him play and think he is really good, but not all time great. Current and former teams recruiting rankings from four years ago never crosses our minds.

He plays in the PAC 10 with a bunch of other weak rosters. He also has a good coach and a team that is built on offense. It isn’t like he was grinding it out with a bunch of dominant teams every week.

Didn’t Washington have a game or two with zero offensive TDs?

Indiana was 9 in the bullshite covid season. They got to 9 by beating Penn St and Michigan teams that were highly ranked based on nothing since nobody knew what was going on that season.

So he has the easiest championship game?

Penix has definitely elevated UW, but UW doesn't exactly have a sister's of the poor roster. They just don't have the depth that the top teams have and have been pretty fortunate with injuries heading into the playoffs.
There's probably 8/9 starters on offense that will be the NFL (6 of those in the 1st 2 rounds) and 4/5 on defense. The offense is good enough to beat anyone and the defense is good enough to not completely blow it.

Or maybe recruiting rankings are very flawed or meaningless in this context...

Penix is not the only common denominator. Kalen Deboer was there at Indiana and Washington. Maybe it's him?

I like Penix and think he’s a really good QB and will be a solid pro. But I think the ‘he’s a generational talent’ is a heat of the moment type accolade.

During the Covid year, with opt outs and players missing games after testing positive and the played what 7 games.
He’s good and had a great year but most impactful QB, sorry no. Excluding LSU players Cam Newton won a NC with a mediocre team in the toughest division in CFB that year by a wide margin

This place is no better than First Take half of the time.

Lamar Jackson took Louisville to #3 in the nation and made them competitive against peak Clemson. The year after he left, Louisville went 2-10 and Bobby Petrino got fired.

We still think the SEC had dominant teams this year?
Washington is basically what Tennessee and Ole Miss aspire to be.
My one quibble with the OP's statement is that it takes away from the fact Washington has 3 legitimate NFL receivers in Odunze, McMillan, and Polk.

Once again - Washington had massive problems with injuries and the flu for that game and Stanford.
This is another case where an SEC team would be praised for its "resilience."

Do recruiting rankings include transfers? Because that has changed the game the last few years. Things are definitely not as tightly pegged strictly to high school recruiting rankings.

but that’s not what the thread is about.
Penix was healthy.
The “most impactful college football player” in recent history should be able to put up at least 1 touchdown vs a 3-9 asu team
