Sucks you have to fill those out for TOPS.

I always got a kick out of the “Free” part. Maybe that’s the source of the problem: kids don’t realize it’s only the Application and not the Aid that is FREE.

I hate filling that out. Why do they need to know how much money I have in the bank?
If kid didn’t qualify for tops, and not getting aid, any reason to fill it out?

No - you don't have to fill it out.
There is a school of thought that if you're a real baller (like most of the OT), you may want to submit a FAFSA when your kid applies to a school so that the school could see your assets and want your student at their school. Otherwise, you don't have to fill it out unless you are getting aid or applying for a federal loan program.

Some colleges require FAFSA for merit scholarships too; because they want to say they have merit scholarships to get kids to apply, but really they use the merit scholarships as a form of financial aid by directing those scholarships to lower income applicants.

I thought I wasn't going to college so I lied and was offered the max pell grant. I ended up going and was never asked for w2s from my parents. I lied for four straight years. Back in 2010 a full pell grant meant full tuition for community college plus a check for something like $1500 a semester.

I mean, that’s just factually incorrect. The receipt of one has absolutely nothing to do with the other.

You technically don’t. The state has an alternative application.

Ok akkkchoooally. But that’s an infinitesimally small amount compared to very not-free loans. Plus, someone has to pay for those grants.

Thank goodness I got out of college before this crap came along. I helped my oldest son do one when he was in college to confirm his TOPS, and it’s over the top unnecessarily long and detailed.

Plus, I think I’ve worked long enough to pay back in taxes what I got as the Pell grant in the first place

Even if your child is getting a full ride academic scholarship, it now requires FAFSA.
Also, I don't expect my son to get any scholarships. He's white, hetero and his parents are relatively wealthy. However, I DO want the school he wants to go to know that we have money and for them to accept him if they want to tap into us as a resource
