What percentage of the blame do you put on the players ability vs the coaching staff?

Our defense wasn't bad this year. They weren't even terrible.

It was a whole different level of ineptness. Never really seen anything like it.

We heard all year that these guys are young, inexperienced etc. etc.

Sure, that's true. But I don't see how ability can make up for even 50% of how bad that squad was this year.

Just curious to hear your take on what you thought the reason was beyond House being trash.

80% on coaches/20% players.

There are PLENTY of teams with equal or worse talent that had much better defenses.

Auburn, for example, has a pretty shitty roster after Harsin and was light years better than we were this season. I think they have comparable talent to us. IF we have their defense, we might have 1 loss.

Our players aren't explosive off the line, we can not run people down, and struggle with tackling.

Sage for example seems like he's a step slow to be elite. He's long, but isn't DBU material from what I see on TV

Perkins is elite but was not mentioned all game. How is that possible?

Its both players and coaching

2020 was statistically worse (although all sec opponents).

I’m in the very small minority but I don’t think it was that much of a scheme issue (which is where the DC/House really does their damage). He did coach LBers so you can fault him for that, although they had moments (Weeks).

I think the main issues are:
-awful (or nonexistent, DL) position coaching which leads to all kinds of problems in technique & fundamentals
-lack of depth & high end talent.

I’d put 40% on both of those and 20% on House. Flame away I don’t care. He didn’t forget how to coach defense and did well in 22 and @ Kentucky in the same role.

It wasn't that the talent was young, because they never really got better. Also, players like Major Burns, he's as good as he's going to get. Now he can play a little bit better with better pieces around him, but if the defense doesn't get better, he's not going to get any better. All that to say, it's not all coaching, but at the same time, the defense had talent. I think that at times, House was stubborn and didn't let the defense play to what strengths they had.

We suffered from a lack of talent, inexperience, poor fundamentals, and poof strategy. Poor talent evaluation, sickness and injuries also hurt.

There were a lot of issues and the blame should be spread around to every facet of the team.

I have never seen an LSU defense that is constantly out of position, receivers running with no one even close to them, linebackers who are this slow, doesn't dare use press coverage most of the time as this defense. Some of it is talent and depth but whose fault is that? This defense needs an overhauled staff, a new culture, and a new voice coaching them.

90% coaches
The examples of dynamic coaches who turn around a program on a dime are legion

Same for coaches who quickly destroy programs.

Coaching was really bad but the players were so slow . I mean Sam and burns were really bad at Safety and Penn and Speights were really bad at LB. There is talent on the defense just needs to be more added and the portal doesnt seem to be the answer for the most part.

100% Coaches/0% Players

Our coaches don't know how to coach defense. We have better talent than what we are witnessing. Our talent is down, but that is not the primary problem.

We couldn't stop Arkansas....Grambling moved the ball on us at will for a quarter and a half.

In my view it is on the coaches. They recruit and coach the players. If the players are not good enough that’s on the coaching staff.

When the entire defense looks lost at almost all times, that is on coaching and it was happening at all levels.

When no adjustments are made as the season progresses, then it is on coaching.

This wasn’t one unit failing. It was all three.

That is on coaching.

Neither are factually true. We didn’t have a full staff. And we missed on secondary players from the portal. Several of them.

Failure of defensive coaching staff to teach technique, tackling, leverage/angles, the players were out of position, taking bad angles to tackle and not using leverage or technique on plays. DL was just trying to bull rush with no swim moves or anything else but trying to bull rush, not having a DL coach was a huge issue which affected the entire defense because it starts upfront and LSU front 7 was terribly coached, Pete tried to help but bad habits were hard to break that late in yr. Secondary took bad angles to tackle and didn.t use good technique in coverage, entire defensive staff has to be replaced and better coaches who teach better/recruit better upfront needs to be hired, that my take from watching ever game this yr.

Defense? 25% coaches and 75% players. I don’t see many ballers out there.
