It will even things out. Give it a few years and the talent will start spreading out.
Given what we've seen this bowl season with the opt outs and such, an expanded playoff can't come fast enough. More meaningful late season games.
I am mainly a fan of an FCS school and can tell you, it works. Teams and fans stay engaged longer into the season.

At best there will be 3-4 teams with a legitimate chance

There were only 7 this year - if you stretch it - assuming no opt-outs and Travis not injured.
That is probably the long end of normal. Most years there will likely only be 3 to 5.
But teams 9-12 are closer to teams 5-8 than 5 through 12 are to 1 through 4. In other words, first round games will be interesting but second round will be dominated by top 4 seeds. Semis will be hit or miss in competitiveness.

No, but that is not the right question. The question is are there more than four legitimate contenders in any given season and in some seasons there are. The point is there will never be a season where there are 13 legitimate contenders so no one will ever get the shaft who deserved to get in. This is the sports version of it is better to let a guilty man go free than to convict an innocent man. Better to have people bitching about teams being in who don't deserve to be in than to have people bitching about teams who deserve to be in and aren't.

Guarantee you that we will see opt outs in the 12 team playoff.

The players that have opted out would, likely, have not opted out if they were in a 12-team playoff this year,
I’m not sure why this would be assumed esp for a 2-3 loss team that doesn’t even belong in a playoff anyway.

Because a team ranked outside of the top 10 has never beaten a “title contender”. Nope. Never in the history of college football rankings.
I’ve been told an undefeated conference champ with a backup QB has no chance against a one-loss team so why would we ever even consider a multiple-loss team for the playoff??

All it will take is a 12 seed pulling off the upset Boise-OU style and questions like this will go right out of the window and have people saying moving to a 12 team playoff was the greatest idea ever.

No. Most years there are two or 3. This is an unusual year.
The average point differential in 14 years of CFP semifinal games is 22.
So going to 12 is ridiculous. It’s all about the money.

Who wouldn’t have been excited to see the 3 loss SEC champ Rohan Davey & Josh Reed in the playoffs in 2001? We would have gotten a bye in the current format.
