They were closed betas depending on company. Friend of mine worked for one so I rode in them a few times. You're downtown going 35mph there's not a whole lot of risk to the passenger.
Similarly, I've been in a Tesla doing autopilot on a windy road. That one has me a little bit more concerned, but the car did great and of course, it had a driver.
