I feel like the article isn’t very accurate. I have seen several trash bags and debris floating in the river and they are likely mistaking that for bears crossing.

Tracking collars are giving the evidence of the crossings and locations.

Their numbers have gone way up here in NE AL over the past 10-15 years.

I had never even heard stories of bears when I was in school, and now there are sightings every year where they have come down off Cheaha into the surrounding valleys.

animals can do things a human cant even come close too, a deer can swim the river like its nothing, i would assume a bear has no trouble either, seems like they would be flamboyant

Three years ago I had trot-lines set on the Big Black River west of 61. We were running a line, set in the end of a long straight a way just before a bend. I was running the boat and could something floating down from a long way off. At first I thought it might be a deer crossing but the closer it got I realized it was a black bear we had to drop the line so he wouldn’t get caught up in it. He went right on past and around the bend. I am guessing he was using current to his advantage. I have seen some odd stuff in the woods but that ranks up there pretty high.

Sows crossing the river is a big deal, as it will expedite the expansion into Mississippi. Bears crossing the river hasn’t been that common or the Mississippi population would be a good bit higher.

Not true as to the population in the Mobile Delta. That population has been there a long time, and for many years that was the only area in Alabama with bears.

Not sure where the ones in the Florida Panhandle come from. But there are now lots over there.
