I'm pretty sure all these "best seller" numbers are based on wholesale purchases, not individual sales in stores.
Many "best sellers" lost huge amounts of money.

Politicians writing books and giving speeches is the biggest payoff scam in the Corporate DC Uniparty system. Corporations who support the D.C. Republican faction of the Uniparty buys 10k books in one purchase, repeats that over several days and hands the books out for gifts, tax write off, it's all good.

One of the things I won’t miss about Barnes And Noble et all going bust is that it will make it much harder to pretend some of these books are “best sellers”.

Just to explain this to the people that don’t know, it’s a bribery scheme.
Third parties will promise to buy the book in bulk, before a word is even written. Those promises allow the publisher to give the author a check upfront for the book.
Few if any of those presold books will be read by anyone. And the book is farmed out to a ghostwriter.
