Trey Murphy shouldn't get the max

He is an unbelievable shooter and good defender but his playmaking skills are lacking. He's nowhere near the passer that BI is and can't create his own shot. Hope we can keep him once his rookie contract us up but giving $30M+/year to him might be a mistake if he doesn't expand his offensive arsenal.

He'll get a max on almost potential alone. Dudes shooting 40% from 3 that can dunk at his height don't grow on trees.

He’s 23 and continues to show gradual improvement year after year. He’s getting 30 mil and we better be the ones to give him that.

Someone with elite size, shooting, athleticism is getting paid a max or close to it.

I don't think people understand how rare a player like Trey is. 50/40/90 player with his athleticism, elite range, efficiency, and touch around the basket is almost a unicorn. He's a modern NBA's prototype.

Its a mistake if the pelicans believe this and don’t give him the max. Murphy is seen in many nba circles as a rising star. And in todays nba- how hes built, his shooting, athleticism and defensive potential- is what you want in any wing.

$30 million isn’t the max, especially when his new deal would start in 2025-2026. $30 million would be 19% of the cap then. NBA salaries are inflating like everything else. Go back just a few years to when Trey was a rookie and Lonzo got paid, 19% of the cap was $21 million,

Thanks. I was confused when I saw the title. I didn't know why anyone was talking about a max.

I agree he shouldn't get the max.
I'm not giving Trey Murphy a 5 year $240M contract. Using Mobley's numbers here, which would be the same scenario for Trey.
You want to pay your 3rd or 4th guy $48M/yr? That's ridiculous.
He can get 25% max of a salary cap of likely $165M, so his first year would be $41M. I'm sorry but i'm not giving that to Trey, and the NBA needs to stop handing out max contracts like they are candy. They should be for the star or two on the team.
Jaylen Brown was a better player after his 4 years in Boston and he didn't get a max. He averaged 20ppg on 38% from 3 and is an elite defender in year 4 before he signed his new contract. He got 21% of the cap, which many at the time thought was a bit of a bargain. He proved himself over the next 4 years and then signed a 5/$305M supermax contract.
Is Trey the best player on our team? NO. so why are some of you wanting to pay him like he is? 20% of the max is more than enough for Trey if he continues along his current projection.

Projections on the estimated salary cap for the 2025-26 season, when Mobley's deal begins, could be $164.6 million. So, if Mobley were to put pen to paper next summer, he could sign a mammoth five-year deal starting at $238.7 million but could climb as high as $286.4 million if he were to win NBA MVP, win Defensive Player of the Year or be named to an All-NBA team in the fourth year of his rookie deal.

There isn't a max guy on our team. I don't think that will be the conversation when they negotiate with Murphy. I'm sure he will get a good deal though and will be with us for the long term. He is definitely a future star for us..

quote:That's the equivalent to roughly $30 mil right now. If you Trey were coming into his extension now, it would seem much more palatable to give him $30mil but it's truly no different than $40 mil 2 seasons from now.

1. If you don't, he's gone
2. You project him to be your 2nd or 3rd best player during that contract
quote:It's really not, he would not sign for that, darn near zero chance.

I'd argue his projection is easily worth a max. 50/40/90 6'10" dudes who can project to give you 20ppg or close to it... That's a max player.

Yeah, idk what he’s worth, but I definitely wouldn’t let him walk. I’d be exploring ways to offload CJ, Ingram or Zion before I let Trey Murphy walk over $5M-$10M a year.
He’s a guy with an awesome skillset for today’s nba, he’s improving, his character is elite and he seemingly wants to be here.
The only way I’m parting with a Trey Murphy type of player is if he’s part of a larger trade to get an Anthony Edwards or Tyrese Haliburton type of player (which obviously isn’t going to happen in any kind of realistic scenario).

Catch and shoot guy that can dunk. And he shoots a really really good %. And he’s really tall. However he can’t really create his own shot or take over a game as the lead option. Doesn’t seem like a max guy to me.

Small sample size, but through 5 games this season, he's at 17ppg with a .673 TS%
And he's still getting better.

Its like me saying Zion when healthy is just guy who makes layups and shoots a high percentage. Not a big deal lol
Hes never been given the opportunity to create or take over as a lead option so I’m not going to hold that against him. Part of signing him to this deal is giving him those opportunities which he’s capable of doing.
