People are responding in ways that they think an alpha would approve of. I don’t buy half of what he’s espousing in this thread.

It's a knee-jerk reaction overall.Some see it as the same as striking UPS drivers or auto workers. Except RNs, etc are just alittledifferent than delivery drivers or assembly line guys

There was a nursing shortage prior to Covid. Covid exacerbated the shortage exponentially. Unions are not going to overnight manufacture experienced, quality nurses. It's critical and hospitals still have entire units shut down because of the shortage. Not sure what it will take to get those that left the field back into the hospitals. Sign on bonuses don't seem to help that much.

That should indicate that it's not fully a money issue.

It’s not a money issue. It’s a body issue. There’s not enough nurses. Unionizing won’t create nurses out of thin air.

Slight decline in enrollment but a higher decline in applicants which to me would mean the quality in the applicant pool is decreased. So not as good a nurse graduates and they probably have more dropouts. Nothing to support that, though.

Nursing schools are taking fewer applicants overall based upon a decline in the number of teachers.

Experienced, quality nurses are out there. They're either on the sideline or involved in non-hospital positions. They simply said "F" this after admins screwed them during Covid, and they moved on. Re-employing them will take some sweet deals, and changes in policy, but it's doable.

I'm thinking our BSN and MSN programs here at our academic health science campus enlarged its facility to help meet demand. No idea where they get their faculty from. They might find out they screwed up.

Hope so. Never know when you are going to need some good nurses (being selfish here). You folks that have to trust your patients to less than optimum hospital care is troubling on many levels. Like I said earlier, glad I don't have to fool with it now.

Ochsner started in New Orleans. I live in New Orleans. I can’t drive 3 blocks on any major streets in the greater NO area without passing an ochsner facility. They seem to be more of a real estate company than a healthcare provider at this point.

And I just read something somewhere about them building a new Children’s Hospital after getting a sizeable gift from Gayle Benson.

My best friend worked for Ochsner for a decade in an administrative position. I’ve heard a lot over the years.

Fun fact: I was born at the OG Ochsner.

You would think so.

However, hospital systems collude with one another to keep wages down for their employees.

It’s a house of cards. They bring in travelers, pay them more, but save on benefits.

And sign on bonuses in many cases are an illusion, because many of the new hires get tired of being screwed staffing wise and leave early.

Yep, unionization is how you totally demoralize a worksite for competitive people.

Again, it comes down to competitive nature vs craving security.

$6,000,000 / 37,000 = $162.12

Assuming you're full-time (2080 hours) 162.12/2080hours = $.077.

The CEO could donate their salary to all the workers and only give each of them a 7-8 cent raise. They'd make an extra 162.12 a year. Let's not pretend the CEO's salary is what's standing between nurses and a better life.

Unions are the economic version of populism. Mobs of the working class hating on the those higher than them.

Rt, I need truck drivers every day. Haven’t needed a nurse in years and sometimes it’s just for the one visit.

Those nurses need the truck drivers daily too. Food and supplies get sent to the hospital no?
