700 million is more than Oakland's payroll for the last ten years.

How do baseball players make so much fricking money? I don’t know anyone who is a big baseball fan anymore.

When I heard how much the Dodgers were paying Ohtani, I said, "That local TV deal must be pretty sweet".

I get that. But none of those teams have the financial muscle of the Dodgers. So they have to get more creative/be willing to take some risks with younger players, but are less established, than the bigger market teams that have more margin for error.

So only 35 M towards the cap for 10 years?

What about the 35 M toward the cap for the 10 years after that?

Esp when 15 of those 20 years will likely not produce 35 M worth of production

The Dodgers sold out their fans. They can make money, sure

frick the fans. Who cares if they win? They make money and don’t win now. LOL

No way a true Dodger fan likes this deal improving the team’s chances long term to win championships

And you are thinking micro, very little picture if you don’t think the Dodgers will easily recoup that $700 million investment. It has very little to do with wind and it will last MUCH longer than 10 years. They’ll be making hundreds of millions in Asia decades after he retires. Hell, decades after he dies. 100 years from now, kids all over Japan will be rocking Ohtani Dodgers jerseys and hats.

Was in Japan this summer and his face was everywhere.

Does this guy not understand how much tax California is going to steal from him? It's worth another career's worth of earnings.

These contracts are dumb. He won’t be worth that for more than 4 years.

Nit even worth it his first season because he can’t pitch until 2025 at the earliest and you’re hoping he’s better than just a #3 for that money.

He’s been playing 32 miles down the freeway from Dodger Stadium for six years, I think he knows the tax structure there.

So stupid to sign a sport player to this long of a contract.

An injury could derail his career tomorrow

$70 million per annum. What a time to be alive
He'll pitch in maybe 30 games.

That's $2.3 million per game. He'll average 100 pitches a game, so he's earning $23,000 per pitch!

That's a shocking number. I think folks were predicting $500 million before his late-season injury...

He won't pitch next year due to said injury, but still, worth every penny in my view...

Think people need to wait and see what the present day value ends up being. Rumored to might be below 500mm

They said 432 K per game over the life of the contract

If you pay him 35 M as a P and 35 M as a hitter for 10 years

I understand the economics of sales etc

But there’s no way he produces enough
on the field to justify a GM putting the team in a position to win championships with the present cap

Could’t happen to a better team IMO
