Looking to get back into running and wanting a new running watch for Christmas. I would like to keep it in the $200 range. Things I'm looking for are:
Fast, reliable GPS.
Always on display
Good build quality, scratch resistance
Decent battery life
Lightweight
Music, preferably on board, but even just remote controls would be nice
Smart notifications: not a deal breaker, but would be nice.
Anyone have a watch they can recommend?

I have the Garmin 255 and love it!

At $200ish budget- Coros pace 3
Stretch it up to $300- Garmin forerunner 255. I believe the "music" version is on sale for $300 now

I would hate to be in the market for anything running related.

I prefer walking. I find that 13,000-15,000 steps a day helps me maintain my healthy weight along with consuming around 2,500-2,700 calories per day.

Garmin Forerunner 245 as well.
Pricing varies across several websites. I've bought a refurbished Apple Watch 3 years ago and it was in great shape. Only imperfections were minor swirls in the pain underneath the watch near the HRM which you will never notice or see.
Controls are fairly easy to learn. If you want music you need to have a Spotify Premium/Amazon Music Unlimited account in order to add the songs.

I have had my Garmin 245 music since 2018. Battery needs to be charged more often, but I still get about 4 days between.

I bought the cheapest Garmin forerunner when I got back in to it, but knew it was ugly and cheaper. Once I hit 30 days of consistency, I got the Epix and love it. Ran my first half and trained purely off the Garmin Coach. Came in under my goal of 2:00 and now it’s a complete lifestyle.
For me, I needed to prove to myself that I’d stick with it before I upgraded. Either way, get on it!!

Pigging backing with the others to say the Garmin Forerunner. Personally I’d spend the extra $ and go ahead and get the 255 but the 245 would be good too and within your price range.

I know it's basically double your stated budget, but I'm quite happy with my Forerunner 955 solar I've had for about a year. Might be able to find a used one somewhat closer to your price range.

You first need to determine one important factor. Do you have friends that run and if so, are they using a Garmin watch? Garmin allows friends and those friends can see you stats (of course you can see theirs as well).

I'm pretty sure almost all activity/running watches have Strava capabilities which is way better than the Garmin Connect social aspect.

I actually do both but definitely have contacts that only do Garmin.

I don't care about sharing runs with friends or anything like that

Just get a Garmin. Second choice would be a Coros. If you’re an Apple guy, those are passable but Garmin and Coros are 1a and 1b for running watches. They all can link with Strava if you care about that, but that shouldn’t be the first thing to consider as alluded to above.
