Actually I would rate South America as a pretty peaceful part of the world in terms of inter nation conflict.

True. They’ve been too busy killing each other internally via dictators, coups, merciless drug cartels, and militant groups of the right and left wing variety.

Oh, and the CIA.

it wasn’t Exxon’s assets that were seized by Venezuela,

XOM has been "compensated" but they definitely had their shite tied up for a while.

Chavez booted them and kept a few billion in assets.

Chevron, I believe, was the only one not nationalized. Which is why they restarted this round.

Chevron was still doing some exporting during sanctions....depending on what you believed.

Not well known in the US, but there were a series of bloody conflicts throughout South America in the 19th century. The worst of these was a war between Paraguay and an alliance of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. In the space of 14 months, Paraguay lost up to 90% of its male population.

Yeah, to your point there was 1 major that I can think off the top of my head - the War of the Pacific between Chile and a Bolivia-Peru alliance in the 1880s. Chile won that war and got a fair chunk of its territory from it. It actually made Bolivia landlocked and it's an issue they still bring up to Chile and international courts from time to time.

There have been like a half a dozen other interstate conflicts since then between various South American states with some territorial changes but I don't think anything that comes close as to the Triple Alliance and War of the Pacific.

Brand dilution. You've got New Guinea, Equatorial Guinea... presumably Old Guinea. It's kind of like USM football. Once the Sun Belt started playing I-A ball, the handwriting was on the wall.

Some economists and historians believe that one thing which holds South America back from being more innovative is that its international borders make too much sense. In Europe, the borders between nations invited constant conflict which forced a Darwinistic struggle for survival. This struggle spawned innovations as stagnant societies were crushed by more dynamic neighbors. Heck, in Asia, many nations’ entire identities are built around defending themselves from rampaging invading armies.

In South America, nations are able to stagnate because the borders make so much sense that nations rarely need to go to war with one-another. As a result, these countries do not fear their neighbors, so they’re just focused on controlling their internal populations, leading to authoritarianism, a large degree of inequality, and economic stagnation.

We can expect the vote totals to track along the lines of Maduros election.

Brazil is going to frick someone up if Maduro follows through here.

Don’t count out France and/or the Netherlands getting involved in some capacity either.
