At what point did knee pads become unnecessary in football?

Most of the pants don't even go over the knees now....

Knee pads are worthless. Now guys not wearing thigh pads are wild to me

When looking cool became more important

Cause they’re uncomfortable as hell. We used to wear them pregame and slide them off as soon as we get back in the locker room

I’d go buy the youth knee and thigh pads and then would cut the knee ones in half.
A knee pad isn’t a stopping any injury to the knee area.

A knee pad won't prevent any Willis McGahee or Marshawn Lattimore type of injuries anyway.

These days, guys only wear them IN the locker room

What exactly is a thigh pad gonna prevent?

Knee pads are worthless. Thigh pads only matter if there's repetitive injury and there's a prospect of myositis ossificans. JMO
The two areas that seem concerning to me are players not putting in the mouthpiece and so many guys with a lot of hair and it makes it so the helmet doesn't fit properly.

Deep thigh bruises are no joke.

You think knee pads are worthless, you should try maxi pads sometime.

Never had a deep thigh bruise, I see. Those pads save A LOT of wear and tear in the quad area. If you've ever had a deep thigh bruise, you'd know. It is debilitating.

Well if it parts of the uniform and equipment required to play, they should all be required to use it. If not don’t let them play,

Football players now only wear pants on gameday. Almost all practices are done in shells with helmet shoulder pads and shorts.

Since it doesn’t really need it’s own thread, I’ll just add it here. Why do 90% of players have a mouth piece but just let it dangle. Why even strap it to a face mask if you aren’t going to wear it ever?

If it's so prevalent and debilitating, why isn't the entire thigh and quad covered in pads? Not just a 4x6 inch area

I can’t believe they let football players play without a mouthpiece

I mean I don't remember legs broken in half and 27 ligaments being blown out in the knee 20 years ago, but that was also 20 years ago when we were actually taught to hit head to head
