I'm looking to purchase an e-bike for our hunting lease. Will be used on mostly flat ground, some mud, and sandy areas which can be managed. Anyone have a e-bike that wont break the bank? I see amazon has a few options in the $300-500 range.

To the OP was just looking at one of my buddies bikes this wknd it’s a rad bike he said he has 1500miles on it and no problems. It’s about a 1300$ bike though I’m not sure I really will like it use it so can’t make up my mind if I want one or just keep using my four wheeler or walk.

I have a BeeCool Adventurer and really like it for Louisiana. It’s a 750 watt hub drive and does what I need. But it was around $1300. I don’t own a 4-wheeler so I use the e-bike to get me deeper into the WMAs/NWRs, on the trails of course.

Thanks everyone, I think i'm sold on the step-through pedal assist bikes. Just need to find one in my price range.

I have the biktrix classic juggernaut duo step through, I have used Rambo's, Hemmingways, and rad rovers. My assesment is the stock torque matters, cost matters, customization matters, and customer service matters. Depending how you take care of them determines the life cycle. I hunt out of a tree saddle, so mine is set up for running and gunning on public land. Customer service is always important, because things break, and there is not a bunch of e-bike mechanics that will work on something that they did not sell. The higher the stock torque the better. Sure you can change gear ratios to get more torque, but something on that bike will be rated for less torque and will break. Usually 2 miles back in the woods.

Never utilized the ebike, a big part of being an outdoorsman is having the physical and mental conditioning to navigate the elements.

I live in the mountain bike world where a new $5,000 e-bike is considered cheap (hell, a 5,000 regular mountain bike is pretty much "mid-tier").

That being said: everything I've heard is to not go budget/chinese on any e-bikes for a variety of reasons. Go with a reputable brand with established customer service. The crappy e-bikes are having issues now with starting fires when charging and such. I believe that a lot of NYC apartments are disallowing them, and bike shop insurance premiums have also started to adjust due to the "liability" of e-bike batteries catching on fire or exploding.

Also, as others said, you don't really want to deal with reliability issues when you're 5 miles into the woods.

That's some great points, i will definitely consider. Currently looking at a GoTrax or Rattan brand bike.

I’m ignorant to these things, but if your e-bike breaks aren’t you then just left with… a bike?

I’ve window shopped them as someone who would use it a few times a year to turkey hunt, my main goal would just to not be completely winded if I have to haul arse from one side of the property to the other when a bird starts gobbling, would a cheap lower watt bike still be out of the question?

You could always buy a cheap fat tire bike from a big box store, then purchase an e-bike kit and install it your self. The cost would be under $1000, unless you go with a large motor over 500 watts, and a battery over 48 volts, and over 15 Amp hours. I did this with my daily rider. It was a hybrid mountain bike, 21 speed, added a 1200 watt front drive kit. Total cost was right at $1000, but I have a 54 volt battery, 20 AH, that is rack mounted and locked to the rack. The bike, on radar, runs 42 mph.

That’s kinda where I was leaning after a very small amount of looking into it, probably just going normal bike at first then adding a hub kit later if I like using it. Some of the comments tho make it sound like even that is a waste of money and only the more expensive ones work at all.
