It hurt real bad and my son learned some new words

quote:

Commonly mistaken for an ant, because of its appearance and its common name, it is a parasitoid wasp species in which the females are wingless, as is true for all females of Mutillidae. It can be recognized by its distinctive red coloring, with a black stripe that goes across the abdomen.[4] They are quick-moving and often take a defensive posture when threatened. Instead of creating nests, the females seek out the brood cells of Eastern cicada killers and horse guard wasps as well as other large ground-nesting members of Crabronidae, where they deposit an egg onto a host larva. The egg quickly hatches into a white, legless grub, which consumes the host and goes through several larval stages prior to pupation. Unlike the females, males have dark, translucent wings and do not possess a sting.[5][2][3] Males fly low over grass in search of mates. Both sexes make a squeaking noise (stridulation) to warn potential predators (another form of aposematism in females, and automimicry in males).[6]

quote:

is best known for its extremely painful sting, ranked 3 out of 4 on the Schmidt's sting pain index

One of those bastards hospitalized my wife.
She too expressed new words I’ve never heard her say.

Where did she get you? And compare it to a red, paper wasp.

So, the velvet ant egg hatches into a larva that feeds on the cicada killer, which was an egg that hatched into a larva that is feeding on a cicada?

I have a bunch in my yard. They're pretty cool when they run around. Apparently they destroy inground hornet nests.

I've never tried to handle them but they're supposed to be very docile.

Did you accidentally smush it or something?

I think I stepped on one of those, with shoes on, about 47 times this past summer. And it still moved. So I stepped 47 more times.

I remember seeing these as a kid and we were all amazed at how tough they were. We’d step and stomp on them over and over and it barely even phased them. I do t remember what we used to call them though, and that’s gonna drive me crazy.

Those things were no joke though. I can’t imagine how bad their stings hurt.

We may have called them bullet ants..??

ETA: definitely was cow ant.
