Could have easily been a triple album (is that the correct nomenclature??) - there's tons of excellent b-sides from the Mellon Collie sessions - Corgan was cranking out some good shite

Smashing pumpkins came to my mind first.
I also grew up in the popular rap album era. Tupac, wu tang and notorious had popular albums.
Elton John yellow brick road??

As I've gotten older, I do tend to look back on 1999 by Prince fairly favorably as a (particularly a non-Greatest Hits/non-Live packages) great double album to listen straight through.
(Officially uncredited, but his little royal purple weirdness almost certainly drew this.)

Was OK. Some Andy great songs but a lot of fluff.
Would have been better had they made some cuts and released just a single album

Notable for radically different versions of several Velvet standards, & the extended organ solo in "What Goes On"

There's been some great ones listed, my personal favorite probably being Electric Ladyland, but man it would be hard to pick just one.
That said, may I add Little Feat "Waiting for Columbus".
