Unless the understanding of the disease has advanced rapidly in the last 5 yrs or so I am not sure how they can definitively say that.
They know very little about transmission and it can stay dormant for decades. Symptoms starts at the very end of the disease life cycle.

MIL’s husband had and went full blown bed ridden in 6 mos. Dr’s said he caught it from a poor transfusion while undergoing a hip replacement. His brain was sent to Cleveland clinic after his death and anything that was used got incinerated.

In the southeast could it be from eating a deer with CWD? Obviously not a pathologist here.

Well, with the advent of cjw that custom should just stop. Back in the good ole days, lab techs use to walk around with blood easily visible on their lab coats and on one thought anything about it. Then along came hiv …

I don’t eat them but my dad loved them.

Absolutely one of the worst diseases out there. Nothing to be done for it at all.

I had a good friend’s Dad pass away from it. First day I did an EEG on him and he was sitting up in the bed, talking away to his family. 2 days later he was in ICU, but sitting in chair. Next day he was nonverbal. Next day he forgot how to swallow. Couple days later he was gone.

As harsh and clinical many of my posts in this thread have been……I’m truly sorry you had to go through that, and I hope you found healing in whatever avenue that made sense to you.

There is a really good Joe Rogan podcast about prion diseases (particularly CWD).
They haven’t yet found any definite evidence of people catching CWD from deer meat, but it’s a big cause for concern.
CJD can be spontaneous, inherited, or from ingestion.
In New Guinea there was a tribe that ate their own dead and they ended up with a prion caused disease called Kuru. Daniel Carleton Gajdusek Won a noble prize for firing out its transmission. Then he got in trouble for child molestation (his journal was bizarre).

Was very common in the Cajun community. I haven’t seen it in 20-plus years. Not sure if it phased out due to generational reasons, or specifically because word got out about the health dangers.
People also used to eat hogs-head cheese, which was pig brain. All brain related food products are illegal now.
You will often see hogs-head cheese at the grocery store, but it’s not real and doesn’t contain brain.

I will get doenvoted like crazy and some fellas on the OB are not going to like this. I think it is a matter of time before they prove a CWD CJD connection. If it can be passed from Mad Cow beef to humans it can be passed from CWD venison to humans.

I'm also shocked at how many people here have personal experience with an extremely rare disease that is contracted by less than 1 in 1 million.
This place gets really weird sometimes.

They’ve ruled out any chance that he got it from an animal. Doing another spinal tap tomorrow is what I was told.
If he didn't get the prion from an animal, it was either a de novo production of the prion (which I guess has to be possible to some extent for prions to exist in the first place), or he ate human nervous tissue.

Read an article about three military guys in A-Stan that were invited to eat with a family. Goat brain was served and only one consumed, that guy eventually died from cjd.

Honestly, I knew nothing about it until this thread. Sounds rare. Creutzfeld-Jakob Link
