Say you’re Arkansas or Mississippi State looking for a coach and you want to rank these possible candidates from best to worst. How would you rank them?
Dan Mullen
Jimbo Fisher
Chip Kelly
Tom Herman
Gus Malzahn

If I was Arkansas or State none of those coaches would be near the top of my list.

Jimbo and Kelly are washed in this age of football. Jimbo doesn’t want to modernize and Kelly’s offense isn’t unique at all anymore.

Seems that Mullen is getting the nod, but let’s examine that.
In his 9 years at MSU, he had a winning conference record once (6-2 in 2014). In his 4th year at Florida, he went 5-6.
Contrast that with Herman, who had a winning conference record in each of his 4 seasons at Texas and both of his seasons at Houston and is 5-0 in bowl games (Mullen has been good in bowls too with a 7-3 record).

Herman is a good coach. He pissed off too many people at Texas with his arrogance but he’s a good coach.
If LSU were in the market for a head coach, I’d be ok with Herman getting consideration.

Seriously Herman is a good coach and runs a good offense. UT has unrealistic expectations and too many impatient boosters. He can be successful in most other places. LSU fans just have a grudge against him because he used us to negotiate with UT.

I’d hope nobody makes coaching hires off of 1 non-playoff bowl game.

I think all of these coaches are in a similar tier but the way I view it.
Gus, Jimbo, Chip have had success at a major program. So that puts them at the top for me. You can argue any order of those three for me and I’d probably be fine with it.
Herman had success at Houston. I guess some minor success at Texas but ultimately categorized as a failure for me.
Mullen got MSU to a level of success they’re not used to within a Power conference. Obviously failed at UF.
So the three with success at a major program first. Then Mullen with success in a major conference. Then Herman with only success at a minor school in a minor conference.

I wouldn't hire any of them.

All of this could be said of Gus. He’s 5-5. In his third season. At U.C.F. Yesterday’s news.

3 Consecutive NY6 bowls is obvious failure? I get his last year was awful, but I think we should stop and ask ourselves if Florida is really the program it thinks it is.
Florida since Spurrier:
8-5 24th
8-5 24th
7-5 25th
9-3 12th
Natty
9-4 13th
Natty
13-1 3rd
8-5
7-6
11-2 9th
4-8
7-5
10-4 25th
9-4 13th
4-7
10-3 6th
11-2 6th
8-4 12th
6-7
6-7
5-5
Outside of 3 great years with two titles in a four year stretch under Meyer, Mullen's tenure was miles ahead of anyone else they've hired.

Hes at a school that just transitioned from G5 to Power 5. BYU is 5-5 Houston is 4-6 and Cincinnati is 3-7.
He's having a decent year under the circumstances.
Kyle Wittingham went 8-5 5-7 5-7 in Utahs first 3 years in the Pac12.
Gary Patterson went 7-6 4-8 in TCUs first two years in the Big 12.
Given time I'd expect UCF to start recruiting towards the Top of the new Big 12 and Gus will probably make a playoff or two if he sticks around for the rest of his career.

I actually didn’t realize he had back to back 10 win seasons at UF somehow. His tenure felt like much more of a failure than that.
