Hunted Cocodrie Lake in Rapides Parish Saturday. Slow is an understatement. Four teal and one Smiling Mallard..Sunday was worse and today was a total bust.
Headed to a different place tomorrow. Fingers crossed..

I would bet you hunt Baptiste it’s the only place I was aware of a few birds but I won’t hunt there anymore just way too many people it’s not worth it to me especially paddling in a pirouge.
Saturday I hunted from Venice out of a mudboat on private land only because I can’t stand the crowds opening weekend. I usually wait until Wed/Thursday to hunt the refuge from my camp on PAL. My buddy backed out of our midweek hunt a couple weeks ago and I didn’t even try to find anyone else to replace him. There’s a little grass upriver but nothing close to typical (5-10% maybe).
It’s going to be interesting to see how many birds stick around over the next few weeks with the lack of food and all the baw’s “scouting”.

Be safe if you try to run South Pass--the dredge is sitting right in the mouth of it. (you need to approach it from the west side to go around behind it).
We went around it on the east side. Two yellow cans about 100 yds apart and we idled between them
I heard someone hit it and ended up in the drink Sat morning but survived.
Also, just for whatever it's worth, we launched at Cypress about 8 am Sat morning. There was a boat load of undercover feds launching next to us. Unmarked mud boat wearing camo and hauling decoys. But they had sidearms with lots of mags. Plus they had ARs in the shotgun boxes. And bullet proof vests under their camo. They weren't hunting.
There was an LA Wildlife crew in a white Ranger at the mouth of Baptiste checking all the duck hunters. But he didn't check us (fishing).
Then a different LA Wildlife crew checked us in S Pass about noon.
Most LEOs I've ever seen in Venice.

I agree. Very very strange. Usually when the ringers arrive at our place, they stay until they eat all the vegetation. They were here earlier than usual and then left. Can confirm the huge populations just west of Antil. They are still there. For some reason that areas has them early every season. Did see more grays and wigeon than usual all weekend. We also have an unusually large amount of coot for this early, which makes it difficult for the few birds we have. Not alot if blue wings either, which we another odd situation. Ponds look great. Ducks will eventually show.

It’s best they stay away while we have better birds in the area.
Guys at lease did very well Saturday, mostly greys and few BWT. They had 8 greys Sunday. Saw plenty, but said they were doing grey shite, circling a bunch then landing 30 yards outside dekes. 4 hunters.

I got stopped twice Saturday--once in South Pass (pathfinder no T-top with 4 agents) and once in Baptiste (pathfinder with T-top with 2 agents).
Glad to see them down there. Baptiste has been an no mans land for the last few years.

All to check to make sure you only shot 1 dogris per person instead of 2 or 3.

Where can I find this? LDWF website doesn’t have it posted and I haven’t seen it anywhere else yet. Interested in reading their comments

A wise baw and nice said: “”No water, No ducks;” and be damned he was right.

And to make sure no one was shooting the mottleds that are closed till Sunday after Thanksgiving.
Had to give an easy one a pass on opening day, bummer.

How in the hell could we see a 500% increase in shovies
I didnt think we could get more per square inch than last year.

They obviously didn’t try and count any dosgris south of Houma, because I’m pretty sure I saw at least 1,000 fly past my blind during the hunt. Either that or they misidentified them as ringnecks.
